(02/15/1905) WAS IN REVENGE THAT PICKWICK CLUB MEMBERS PURSUED MR. AND MRS. FARNAM ON WEDDING DAY. OBJECT TO SECRET WEDDINGS A Quiet Wedding That Became Noisy and Was Well Advertised Before the Day Ended. The first day of married life proved somewhat strenuous to Mr. and Mrs. Lorenzo M. Farnam. They were married secretly (?) soon after 1 o'clock yesterday afternoon. Nobody should know about it, particularly the members of the Pickwick club, a bachelor organization in which Mr. Farnam has been proud to claim membership for several months past. Little did Mr. Farnam and pretty Miss Bernice Warren imagine, as they left Huntley's restaurant at about 12:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon and walked leisurely to the rectory of St. Joseph's Catholic church, that their every movement was being watched by special Hawkshaws employed by the members of the Pickwick club and also by a reporter for The Daily Oklahoman. Yet such was the case and the espionage was continued after they had been pronounced man and wife by good Father Lanslots and proceeded to the neat cottage at 826 West Grand which had been handsomely fitted up and furnished for them several days in advance. The bliss of assured companionship through life of the chosen one did not entirely overshadow the delight of the young people in the belief that they had eluded the watchfulness of the Pickwickians. It must be so, for in the blindness of love it appeared to them that not one of all the "crowd" had become aware of the momentous occurrence. The afternoon passed quietly and happily at the Grand avenue cottage, but the storm was brewing and developed in all its fury when at about 8:30 o'clock last evening the members of the Pickwick club came marching into the yard at No. 826 and knocked for admittance. The assaulting column looked too formidable to Mr. and Mrs. Farnam, however, and they not only failed to go to the door, but put out the lights in the cottage and awaited developments. Pretty soon a pile of goods boxes was built in the front yard and ignited, lighting up the surroundings and the invaders were seen to get very busy. They visited every side of the building and were also heard upon the roof. They were decorating the home of the bridal couple. Soon great banners were hung about the place, some of them high up on the roof, reading in box-car letters, as follows: "We are just married—Don't bother us." "Larry and Bernice will spend their honeymoon here." "Eloped couple! The couple who eloped are at 826 Grand avenue." This was also posted at various places along Grand avenue. Almost the entire outside walls of the house were plastered with hand bills reading: "Eloped! Larry and Bernice are just married and spending their honeymoon at 826 West Grand avenue. Call and see them. They are so happy." A big cloth sign read: "This house is now occupied by a young and beautiful couple, just married, just married," and another, "Loves young dream. Coal is so high, too.!" The hand bills were distributed at the Marquette club, Westfall's drug store and other places down town. Many of the people residing in the neighborhood of 826 Grand avenue took a lively interest in the doing of the Pickwickians and lent every possible assistance in the way of posting decorations. Just before abandoning the siege the Pickwickians posted conspicuously over the house a number of flaming red paper hearts. The bride is the charming and accomplished daughter of Alderman J.F. Warren and has for some time been his private secretary as president of the Farmers State bank. Mr. Farnam is credit man for the Oklahoma Wholesale Grocery company of this city. Both have moved in the best society in Oklahoma City and have a great host of warm friends, not the least of whom are the members of the Pickwick club, who resent the secret marriage of any of its members and never fails to punish those who attempt such innovations. (02/15/1905) Miss Wycoff and Mr. Thomas will be married this evening at 8 o'clock at the bride's home, in the presence of about sixty invited guests. (02/16/1905) Wedding Permits. Marriage licenses were issued yesterday by the probate clerk to George Smith and Miss Mary Taylor of Edmond; Robert M. Lake and Miss Annie K. Zimmerman of Oklahoma City. (02/19/1905) It will probably come as a great surprise to the wide circle of friends and groom, that Miss Georgia Young and Mr. Edward Thomas were married at Dallas, Tex., on Christmas day, and have kept their marriage a secret ever since. Both the young people are employes in Mellon's store, Miss Young, who has resided in the territory for fifteen years, having charge of the dress goods and silk department, and Mr. Thomas for a year past having filled a position in the office. The plan carried out by the young people was to get Christmas holiday vacation leave, when the bride went to Fort Worth to see her brother, and the groom also to Texas to see his mother. They met at Fort Worth and were married. The groom has been away for a month past looking after some property interests in Arizona, but arrived home last night, when the happy pair went to Mr. Mellon and confessed and were promptly blessed and congratulated. Monday the runaways will have to run the gauntlet of their fellow employes and it is possible that there will be traces of rice on the wide aisles of Mellon's store, which the casual shopper many not note, but which will mean that the news has leaked out. Both the young people are deservedly popular and their marriage is a happy event. (02/19/1905) Wedding Permits. Pratt, their former pastor, now in charge of the Reno Avenue Methodist church of this city, officiated. The bride and groom left on the evening Frisco for a wedding trip in Missouri, which will include a visit to the bride's former home at Vernon. Mr. George Boyd and Miss Lela Russell of Yukon accompanied the couple and acted as attendants at the wedding. THE PICKWICK CLUB'S REVENGE Bachelor's Organization Resented Desertion by One of Its Most Prominent Members. Rev. Kelly, pastor of the Lutheran Evangelical church, at 4 o'clock last evening, solemnized the nuptials of Charles Edward Johnson and Miss May Milner, at the home of the bride's parents, 109 West Park place. Only the immediate relatives of the bride witnessed the ceremony. It was to be a quiet wedding, but the groom had been a member of the Pickwick club, an exclusive bachelor's organization, and the members of the club resented desertion from its ranks. As soon as the news of the wedding became general the members draped their club room in mourning and then in a body proceeded to the Milner residence. The shrubbery in the yard and the porch were festooned with tri-color bunting, old shoes were nailed to the porch, fence and trees; the mammoth phonograph from Westfall's drug store was placed across the street and droned forth sentimental songs for the delectation of the young married people; megaphones were employed in announcing to everybody passing by that a couple newly married were located there; fifty urchins beating tin pans paraded about the yard and there was a continuous roar. At 8:30 the Pickwickians commenced burning red lights in front of the house, and the Red Men's band appeared on the scene and serenaded those within the residence, and dozens of carriages and automobiles lined up in front of the place while a great throng of people was gathered in the yard and on the street. The crowning atrocity occurred when the groom, who appeared on the porch, was kidnapped and taken to the Pickwick club and locked in a room and only the earnest pleadings of his fair young bride secured his release. Then he headed a procession to the Milner home, being followed by the Pickwickians, each of whom carried some of his belongings, all of which were stacked on the front porch of his new home, wearing apparel and all such bric-a-brac as can be reckoned among the belongings of a modern bachelor. Altogether it was the noisiest quiet wedding this town has ever seen. (06/09/1905) Sayre Editor Marries Guthrie Girl. Guthrie, Okla., June 8.—J.O. (07/07/1905) JOCKEY JACK WON BARNES HANDICAP UNDER ORDERS TO THROW THE RACE HE FINISHED FIRST—WILL RETIRE FROM TRACK FOR GOOD. Miss Minnie Barnes and former Jockey Adelbert Jack were married by Judge Harper, Tuesday afternoon. The match concluded a series of interesting incidents. The bride is a daughter of Mr. E. Barnes, the owner of a string of horses at the running meet last week, including Roy Baker and Billy Jordan, and until Saturday, the groom had been riding for Mr. Barnes. After the fifth race Saturday Jack was discharged from the employ of Barnes, but the affections of the daughter never wavered, and when Mr. Barnes left for his home with his ponies Monday, the daughter had a different view of the situation and failed to comply with the order to emigrate. This (Wednesday) race was on the square with Jack and he refused to throw it, although the order of Saturday was to the effect that it was all off with him and his running mate. Miss Barnes and Jack retained the lead, from the getaway and finished in the Probate courtroom, neck and neck. Miss Barnes and Jack tied for winning place, and the others in the handicap pulled up lame. Summary: Last Race—Delmar track to Court House—Adelbert Jack (Cupid) won, Miss Minnie Barnes, favorite, (also Cupid), second, E. Barnes, third. All others distanced. Time, 7-4-05. Track rough. Mr. E.
