COAL CREEK CEMETERY AKA: Cane Creek and Creek Mine Cemetery Okmulgee County, Oklahoma Researched by Candy Hickman: crhickman74@hotmail.com or crhickman1274@pgtc.com Driving instructions to Coal Creek Cemetery: From I-40 take the US Hwy 62 exit [exit #240B] at Henryetta, this will take you north bound, to the stop light at US Hwy 62 and the Hwy. 75 / Main Street. You will be turning west [left] at the stoplight. Go westbound on Main Street / Bus. 75, approximately 1.3 miles, turn left [south] on 10th street. Note: 1. Proceed down 10th street, you will go pass the following streets in Henryetta: Broadway, Moore, Reagan, Meacham and then Corporation. You have traveled about 0.35 tenths of a mile at this point. After the W. Corporation Street [0.56 tenths of a mile] you will travel under the I-40 overpass continue south to the intersection of Dustin Road and Creek Mine Road. Note: 1.Creek Mine road bares off to the right / west. 2.Dustin Road continues south crossing the Burlington Northern Railroad tracks. Proceed south on Dustin road crossing the RR tracks, the road will go up a low-grade hill and the 1st curve will curve to the right. [Approx. 0.28 tenths of a mile from the RR crossing.] Note: 1. You will cross the Coal Creek bridge / culvert approx. 2 ½ tenths after crossing the RR tracks. 2. Road S. 210 Road [N3940] bares off straight and slightly to the left. Following the road as it curves to the right proceed to the second curve approx. 0.47 tenths of a mile. 3. Dustin road [County road 142] bares to the left at this point. 2. There is a dirt drive that takes off to the right. This is the drive that you need. 4. From Main street and 10th street in Henryetta to the Coal Creek cemetery turn off is approximately 1.8 miles. The dirt drive will take you pass a house [on the right] then bring you to two gates. Note: 1. From the road to the pasture gate on the dirt Drive is approx. 12 yards. 2. The gate to the right leads to a house. 3. The gate to left / straight is the gate to the Cemetery. This gate has signs one it: NO Trespassing and NO Hunting. 11 Nov 2001 I received the following information from Mr. Homer Penequine: "The road to the cemetery is on the section line. We run cattle in the pastures next to the road. The gate is unlocked and can be used any time. Please visit when you choose, but be sure to close both the pasture and cemetery gates." I recommend that you check with Mr. Homer Penequine to get permission to cross his property before going to the cemetery. Go through the gate and proceed west bound on the dirt road, you will be traveling through private property, please remember not to litter, and TO CLOSE THE GATES as you go through them. Follow the road approx. 0.32 tenths of a mile and you will come to the Coal Creek branch. Cross the creek and on the west bank, you will need to stop and open the gate that leads into the cemetery. You may park your vehicle just inside the cemetery. Some History of Coal Creek Cemetery: The Coal Creek cemetery is approximately a five-acre burial ground that was deeded by a local coal company to Frank Summers and Benjamin Clinton Furr years ago. It is used as a free burial ground and Coal Creek Cemetery is on land owned by Mr. Homer Penequine. Coal Creek cemetery is located near an old coal mine. The cemetery is grown up except around Memorial Day when the grass and weeds are bush hogged down. After years of neglect the grounds were being cleared with a bulldozer when they discovered they were in a cemetery. A lot of stones, were broken and destroyed, misplaced and moved from the original location of the graves during the clearing. Interesting note: There are some Furrs buried in Coal Creek Cemetery. Henryetta was formerly known as FURRS. In 1900 Furrs name was changed to Henryetta. Note: The cemetery is listed in alphabetical order because of the damaged, misplaced and some headstones moved from original location. The initials are reflected as to what is on the sandstone's.
