Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Belford were in Okmulgee in business Monday. W. B. Haynes of Sapulpa, was in Beggs on business Friday evening. John Everetts of Tulsa spent the week-end here with his parents. Paul Harvey who is employed in Stroud, spent the week-end in Beggs. Frank McDowell of Okmulge wass in Beggs on business Saturday afternoon. Elzey Greer and Paul Gilbert were Okmulgee visitors Monday morning. Bernice Greer of Okmulgee was a Sunday guest of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Greer. Manferd Hurt who is working in Shawnee spent the week-end here wIth his parents. Mr. and Mrs Carl McFall of Tulsa visited in the home of Mr. and Mrs. McFall Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Guckian of Okemah, and their daughter of Oklahoma City, spent this week-end with Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Everetts. Mrs Bert Martln and daughter Anna Mae, spent the week-end with Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Goodman Mrs. J. H. Bell is moving from Muldrow, Okla. to make her home with her daughter. Mrs. Beulah Bethel. Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Bradshaw and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bell were guests of Mr. and Mrs. C. N. Gilbert Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Dean Pendleton spent Sunday March 24 in Keystone, Okla. visiting the father's parents. Mr. and Mrs. B. R. Provence and son, Carl Nell attended the county singing at Liberty school Saturday night and Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Gilbert and family of Beaverton, Mich., arrived Saturday evenmg They will spend two weeks here visitmg relatives. Mrs. R. H. Meunier and grand-daughter, Betty Fowler visited over the week end with reatives in Tulsa. Mrs. Quentin Goodman who was called to Hominy because of her sister's illness returned home Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. 0. W. Walker of Ada were guests Saturday night and Sunday of Mr. and Mrs. B. R. Provence. Mrs. Marie Dutcher visited Mrs. Anton Snyder and baby, who is ill in clinic at Okmulgee, last Friday afternoon. Mrs. Dean the mother of Mrs. Eskridge fell and broke her hip Saturday. She was taken to the Mercy hospital at Tulsa. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Pate and daughter, of Coffeyville, Kansas, visited Sunday with the former's brother and wife, Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Pate. G. N. Haddad of Coalgate visited his sons George and Sam saturday and Sunday. He came to attend the opening of their new grocery store. The Rebecca's are sponsoring a food sale for the Odd-fellow's to be here at Beggs Saturday April 6. Coffee and hamburgers will be served all day. J. N. Crawford of the U. S. Navy, wbo had been visiting his mother and other relatives here for the last three weeks returned Wednesday to San Diago Calif. Mr and Mrs. L. F. Jones, son Richard and Mrs. Jones father, P. G. Rawden of Oklahoma City returned last Saturday from a weeks trip to Rochester. Minn. Mr. and Mrs. P. G. Rawdon retumed to their home in Oklahoma City Sunday. Mrs. Rawdon visited here a week in the home of her daughter, Mrs. L. F. Jones while they were away. The Veterans of Industry and Old Age Pension league of Beggs will hold a joint session Friday night April 5, at 7 p. m. This will be a closed meeting. All members in good standing earnestly requested to be present. TEN YEARS AGO-Mrs. L. J. Shepherd has been confined to her home by illness the past week. Mrs. Chas. Lewis and Mrs. Erniest Eisie were visitors in Depew last Saturday. Mrs. Sam Rogers and baby of Seminole are visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Garrison. Miss. Jackie Wallace of Stillwater spent the week end with her parents here. Mr. and Mrs. Ross McNutt of Morris, spent the week end here with relatives. Mrs. Ves Berryhill who underwent an operation at St. John hospital in Tulsa this week is doing nicely at this time. Mr. and Mrs. David Windham of Merkle, Texas. are visiting relatives here this week. Neal's Auto Supply Come In And See New Line Of Electric Fixtures Forrest Produce - Beggs, Oklahoma, Bulk Garden Seed, Baby Chicks Better Fat 25 Cents. { APRIL 12, 1940 } THE BEGGS INDEPENDENT Mayor Sam Hand Passed Away Monday Night The citizens of Beggs and community wer greatly shocked Monday night by the sudden death of Sam Hand, age 61. manager of the Beggs Telephone company and Mayor of Beggs for the past two years, which occurred shortly after 7 o'clock that evening and was caused by a heart attack. A few minutes before, Mayor Hand was called to the WPA sewing room where a fire had been discovered, and while supervising the extinguishing of the blaze. he became suddenly ill. Mr Hand had been suffering poor health for some time past but for several weeks prior to his untimely death appeared to be much inproved in health. Mr. Hand and family came to Beggs in 1928. acquiring the Beggs Telephone company and has since aperated that enterprise. He made extensive improvements in the exchahge during these years He was public spirited and intensely, interested in his town and community. In Apnl 1938 he was elected mayor to fill the unexpired term of Tom Chism who died the previous January and was relected to this office in April 1939. Several years ago he was largely instrumental in the building of the 4-H club house at Beggs lake, and during his incumverncy as mayor had much to do with the securing og the WPA project which resulted in placing all streets of the City in good condition and obtaining a WPA project for burymg the city water main which had become exposed by erosion. When the municipal lake faied it was Sam Hand who was instrumental in discovering an all forgotten state statute issue scrip bonds, secured passage for an issue for $5000.00 and today we have three wells completed for water supply with two more to be drilled. When he assumed office the town debt was more than $400,000. He succeeded in reducing this indebtedness to $110.000 in federal bankruptcy court. It is generally agreed that he was one of the best public officials Beggs has ever had. Funeral rites were conducted in the Methodist church Wednesday at 2:30 p. m. Rev. J. E. Snell the pastor officiating, and burial was made in the Okmulgee cemetery under direction of the Bingham Funeral home with members of Beggs Mason Lodge of where Mr. Hand was an honored member, in charge of the ceremonies at the graveside. active pallbearers were L. F. Jones, Pate Paulin, Ray Nemeck, I. J. Trolinger, George Haddad and a Louis Steigleder. Honorary pallbearers were, Mike Bivins, W. A. Jenkins. Raymond Koerner, George Sitler, W. M. Middleton, Hoyt Vick and R. W. Steinman. Beggs and R. A. Hockensmith, Okmulgee. Mr. Hand is survived by his widow. Mrs. Nona Hand; two sons. Floyd Hand, Duncan and Forrest Hand, Beggs; two daughters. Mrs. Fred Peck. Comanche and Mrs. Carl Rice Okmulgee. Four brothers, Henry Hand, Lone Wolf. Tom Hand, Celt, Mo., Berry Hand, Winchester Mo., and Bob Hand. Wayland Mo.; three sisters. Mrs. Margaret Watkins, Colorado Springs, Colo., Mrs. Emma Kinkead, Lebanon, Mo., and Mrs. Florence Kettell, Plad, Mo.; and six grandchildren. Former Beggs Woman Dies In Okmulgee, Mrs. Sarah Harmon, aged 88, died last Saturday at the home of her son John W. Harmon. The deceased lived here for eight yearsbefore moving to Okmulgee a few months ago. Funeral services were held in the Church Of God in Okmulgee Monday afternoon conducted by the pastor, Rev. J. D. Harmon and burial was made in the South Heights cemetery in Sapulpa inder the direction of the Bingham Funeral Home. J.S. Nickell injured In Car Wreck, Tuesday morning near Preston while on his way to Okmulgee. Mr. Nickels was driving a new Chevorlet car and was traveling about forty miles an hour, when a man pulled his car across the road just in front of him. In order to keep from hitting the man he applied the brakes and pulled to the side of the road going into a ditch, his car turning over. His left shoulder was dislocated and the ligaments of his shoulder was injured, he also received a cut on his head. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Good head moved Wednesday to the Goodman property on North Broadway. { APRIL 14, 1940 } THE BEGGS INDEPENDENT Local And Personal Manferd Hurt of Shawnee spent Sunday here. Deanna Lloyd of Muskogee visited friends here Sunday evening. Mr. and Mrs, Joe Vick of Oklahomo City were visiting in Beggs Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. A. M. were Hensley were Okmulgee visitors Tuesday afternoon. Johnnie Anne Wilcox of Oklahoma CIty spent the week-end here visiting friends. Mrs. Tom Stine went to Tulsa Tuesday. She attended Grand Chapter while there. Thelma Pendleton of Tulsa visited in the home of her parents Mr. and Mrs. Gus Pendleton over the week-end. Mrs. Elzey Greer, Mrs. Paul Gilbert, Mrs. Ray Pendleton and Mrs. J. W. Potts were in Okmulgee Monday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Potts of Sycamore, Kansas visited in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Elzey Greer over the week-end. Mrs. H. L. McFall and daughter Miss Viola attended the funeral services of Felex Quinlan Sr., held last Friday in Tulsa. Charlie Everetts. J. J. Via. Ray Nemeck and W. C. McTaggart attended the wrestling matches In Tulsa Monday night. Mr. and Mrs. C. P. Fowler and son. Billy of Wichita Kansas visited in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Withers Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. Paul GiIbert and famlly left for their home at Beaverton, Mich., Wednesday after spending two weeks here. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Gilbert and and Mr. and Mrs. C. N. Gilbert and daughter Betty Lou visited relatives in Cleveland Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Pendleton and Mr. and Mrs. Will Pendleton made a trip to Council Hill Tuesday night ro visit Mrs. Sally Phillps who Is ill there. Floyd Hand of Duncan and Mr. and Mrs. Carl Rice and daughter Carol Anne of Okmulgee spent Sunday here in the home of their parents Mr. and Mrs. Sam Hand. Mr. and Mrs. George Sitler and Edgar Sitler and Mr. and Mrs. Gene Brady Were among those from Beggs ro attend the funeral of Felex Quinlan Sr., in Tulsa last Friday. Miss Lois Stewart of Sulphur spent the week-end here in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Hand. Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Hensley spent the evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. N. Gilbert Tuesday. Bert Hodges of Preston was in in Beggs Wednesday on his way to Oklahoma City to visit his son and family. Clifford Johnson was taken to the State Mutual hospital in Okmugee last Sunday evening for medical treatment. Misses Maxine Johnson, Geraldine Swafford, Margaret Ann Henderson and Lillian Scott enjoyed a hike into the country Monday evening. Mrs. Joe Woodard, who has been in Oklahoma City taking medical treatment arrived Monday evening to visit in the home of her sister, Mrs. Leonard Cantrell. R. L. A. Stiegleder of Duncan Oklahoma. Visited his brother Louis Wednesday of this week a attended the funeral services for Sam Hand that afternoon. Mrs. G. E. Vanderford who has been staying with her sister, Mrs. Anna Shoe in Tulsa, who is seriously ill, was home a short time Sunday and reports her sister in a very critical condition. Mr. and Mrs. Elzey Greer and Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Potts went to Seminole Sunday. Mrs. Max Stine and son Donald Ray who had been visiting here for a few days returned home with them. J. J. Massad arrived here last Friday from Lawton where he moved his store. Mr. Massad is here to sell his home and move his I wife and the children to Lawton. He is well pleased with his new location. N. C. Thomas attended the Druggist convention in Tulsa Tuesday and Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Winford Smith of Henryetta were in Beggs on business Monday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Roberts of Okmulgee attended funeral services for Sam Hand held Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. Mollie Clark went to councll Hill Tuesday to visit her sister who is ill. She plains to spend several days there. Mrs. A. N. Harley. Mrs. Robert Willis and Mrs. C. E. Ellzey all of Comanche visited in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Hand Monday afternoon. They went to Tulsa to attend Grand Chapter Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. O. T. Cory and daughter, Corene and Maxine Johnson visited relatives In Skiatook Thursday of last week. The girls stopped over in Tulsa on their way home and were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Chas Radford. Betty Lavar Lancaster the little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Lancaster received the Angel food cake made by G. S. Colyer in stead of a girl from Okmulgee, that was given away at the V. I. A. meeting held two weeks ago tonight. We are sorry to have been misinformed, thus making this mistake. ALL CANDIDATES TO SPEAK FRIDAY APRIL 26TH the Veterans of Industry and THE Old Age Pension league will postpone their regular meeting on Friday night of this week on account of the Federal Stamp Plan meeting to be held at the city hall. They will hold their next regular meeting on Friday night April 19. This will be a closed meeting for members only. On Friday night April 26, the V. I. A. will have a pie supper String bands from Beggs and Okmulgee will furnish the music for this occasion. Candidates will be given an opportunity to speak at the meeting on April 26.
