Boss, D.V.M., went to be with his Lord January 27, 2003. Dr Boss was born to Clarence and Cora Boss in Okmulgee, OK, on May 17, 1929. He went to school in Okmulgee and Tahlequah and moved to Pawnee, OK, where he graduated from Pawnee High School in 1947. He attended Oklahoma Baptist University and graduated from Oklahoma A and M College in 1951. He worked for the Coldwater Cattle Company in Amarillo, TX, as assistant ranch manager until 1957, serving in the US Army Veterinary Service at Fort Leonard Wood, MO, from 1952- 1954. He was on the U.S. Army Rifle Team and won many medals in shooting competitions. In 1957, he returned to Oklahoma A and M College to study veterinary medicine, graduating from the now Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1961. While there, he met Ruth Bowen of Coffeyville, KS, and they were married May 28, 1960. They have two children, Robert, who lives in Portland, OR, and Anita, who lives in Arlington, VA, with her husband, Darren Wolpert. Dr. Boss returned to Amarillo, TX, to begin a large animal practice upon graduation. He practiced there for 14 years and then moved to Edmond, OK, to establish an equine surgical practice. He designed and developed Equine Medical Associates on I-35, east of Edmond, in 1979. It was the only facility in the area doing orthopedic and anthroscopic surgery on horses. After he sold his interest in the hospital partnership in 1984, he did surgical referrals for a number of years. For several years, he inspected thoroughbred horses for the Heritage Place Elite Sale and was able to utilize his great love of flying to travel across the country to evaluate the horses. Dr Boss was always committed to giving back to his profession through organized veterinary medicine. He joined the American Association of Equine Practitioners in 1962 and remained an active, devoted member. He served on several committees and the Board of Directors and became its President in 1982. While living in Texas, he was a Director of the Texas Veterinary Medical Association and a charter member of the Texas Academy of Veterinary Practitioners. After moving to Oklahoma, he founded and was president of the Oklahoma Academy of Veterinary Practitioner. He held licenses to practice in Oklahoma, Texas, Kentucky, and Kansas. He has also served as the Oklahoma Chairman for the Morris Animal Foundation. In 1988, he became a Trustee for the American Veterinary Medical Association Professional Liability Insurance Trust. He took a personal interest and felt a deep responsibility to safeguard the reputation and practices of the veterinarians in the program. A faithful Christian since childhood, he was a deacon, Sunday school teacher and director in the First Baptist Church of Amarillo, TX. He is a member of the First Baptist Church in Edmond, OK. He is survived by his wife and children and one sister, Hazle Boss Neet, of Pontotoc, MS, a sister-in-law, Lois Boss, of Pawnee, OK, and many nieces and nephews. Dr. Boss will be cremated by the Baggerly Funeral Home. There will be a memorial service for him on Tuesday, February 4, 2003, at 2 p.m. in the First Baptist Church, 1300 SE 33rd Edmond, OK. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the First Baptist Church Piano Fund or the Fine Arts Institute Building Fund, P.O. Box 11, Edmond, OK, 73083.
