He was born Thursday, March 13, 1924 to Joe and Laura (Sellers) Carpenter in Council Hill, Oklahoma. On August 5, 1949, he married Norma Sue Schott in Van Buren, Arkansas. He served in the United States Army during WWII aboard the USS Hopewell throughout the war and served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Dr. Carpenter went to grade school and high school at Council Hill and he graduated with a Bachelors Degree from Northeastern State College in Tahlequah and then received his Masters Degree in Administration Education. He received his Doctorate in Education at the Oklahoma State University. Through Dr. Carpenters teaching career, he taught Math for 12 years at OSU Tech and Math and Shop Class for 2 years at Morris High School. He was a Superintendent of Liberty Morris Schools for 3 years, an Assistant Superindent at the Area Vo Tech in Wilburton for 4 years and a Superindent at the Pioneer Area Vo Tech in Ponca City for 17 years. After retiring, James and Sue moved to Okmulgee and raised Black Angus cattle as a hobby. He was a member of the Okmulgee First United Methodist Church and the Harmony Class. He belonged to the Retired Educators Organizations: OREA and AARP. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Laura Carpenter, brothers: Willard, Leonard and Joe Carpenter of Council Hill; Sisters: Lucille Ashworth of Mt. Pleasant, MI; Gertrude Lowrance of Muskogee and Peggy Lee Carpenter of Council Hill. Survivors include: wife: Sue of the home; daughter: Sandra Jackson and husband, Randy of Montevallo, AL; sisters: Juanita Harris of Muskogee and Wanda Wassom of Wagoner; sister-in-laws: Lorene Carpenter and Naomi Carpenter of Council Hill; nieces and nephews. Services will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 1, 2005 at the First United Methodist Church of Okmulgee with Reverend Wayne Parker officiating. Burial will follow the service at the Council Hill Cemetery under the direction of the Shurden-Kelley Funeral Home of Okmulgee.
