He was born Friday, October 3, 1919 in Iowa. He was the second son of three of Roy and Ethel (Sheldon) Hughes, then of Hartley, Iowa. He graduated from the Sutherland Iowa High School in May 1935 and could not enter college that fall as he was not yet 15. He later graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Iowa in 1941 and was hired by Phillip Petroleum in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. He was transferred to the Okmulgee Refinery in 1956 and worked there until he retired in 1982. Darrel married Edna Mae (McGuire) Hughes on June 20, 1982 at t he First United Methodist Church in Okmulgee and made their home in Okmulgee. Darrel was a member of the First United Methodist Church and a member of the Harmony Sunday School Class. He was a Master of the Okmulgee Masonic Lodge #199 for many years. Other Masonic Memberships, included: Red Cross of Constantine, Prince of Peace Conclave; Knights Cross of Honor; Oklahoma Priory #9; Holy Royal Arch Knight Templar Priest; Oklahoma York Rite College; Beoudin Shrine at Muskogee; Okmulgee Chapter #39; Okmulgee Council #17; Gethsemane Commandery #25; Past Grand Commander of Knights Templar of Oklahoma and Past Secretary of Okmulgee York Rite Bodies. He was also an active member of the Okmulgee Lions Club for 31 years and liked to play golf. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Harlan and two sister-in-laws: Carol and Rottie. Survivors include: his wife, Edna Mae Hughes of the home; brother: Sheldon Hughes of Park Forest, ILL; six nieces and nephews: Gary Hughes and wife, Judy; Beverly Parks and husband, Dave; Clifford Hughes and wife, Kathi; Raenette Galimba and husband, Joe; Sheldon Hughes, Jr. and wife, Kalina; and Winston Hughes and wife, Ann; sister-in-law: Leota McGuire of Okmulgee Services will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 2, 2005 at the First United Methodist Church in Okmulgee with Reverend Craig S. Denslow officiating. Burial will follow the service in the Okmulgee Cemetery under the direction of the Shurden-Kelley Funeral Home of Okmulgee. Honorary Pallbearers will be Edward W. Hart, John A. Schrawger, A.P. Alexander, Dwight Middleton, Kenneth Buckley, Linnie Easterling, Norman Magrini, Jon Giddings and Kenneth Bridgeman. Memorial may be made to the First United Methodist Church 302 S.
