Karr, Velda Dee Velda was born in Henryetta, Oklahoma and passed away in Mountain Mesa, California, due to complications of COPD. Velda and her late husband Bill Karr retired from General Telephone Company (GTE) after working for them in the Ventura and Oxnard area for 25 years. At the time of retirement, she was an engineer and a woman ahead of her time. She was touted as being the first woman in Califonia to climb a telephone pole. Bill and Velda's dream was to retire and live "on the hill" above Kernville. The family spent over 60 years vacationing on the Kern River with her late parents Dee and Amber Woods, as well as the Kightlinger family from Bakersfield. Since her husbands death in September 1998, Velda has been very active in local volunteer groups. She was a member of the Red Hat Ladies, Democratic Women's Club, Kern River Valley Women's Club and The Ladies of the Elks. She dearly loved her animals, family and friends. Velda was preceded in death by her husband, William A. Karr; parents Dee and Amber Woods; sisters Sharline Bundy and Doris Burdette. She is survived by her son, Mike Hays of Ventura, daughter and son-in-law Lynda and Norm Tyler of Alaska; grandchildren Bob Canet of Oregon, Marc Canet of Alaska, Joey Hays and Kelley Hays of Ventura; great grandchildren; Rob Canet of Oregon and Tanner and Caten Canet of Alaska, as well as many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2006 at Sierra Mortuary and Funeral Home in Lake Isabella, CA. In memory of Velda, donations to any animal rescue group would be greatly appreciated.
