Born December 25, 1928, to Virginia and Dr. J.O. Lowe in Okmulgee, OK. The family moved to Tulsa, in 1931. Mrs. Mills graduated from Central High School in 1946. Mrs. Mills attended Randolph-Macon College and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin, Cum Laude, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. She worked in the fashion industry in Pasadena, CA, before returning to Tulsa, in 1953, where she worked for the Tribune newspaper as a Society Section Reporter. Mrs. Mills continued her passion for writing throughout her life, and was published in numerous Tulsa publications. On November 20, 1954, Barbara Lowe, married John Lawrence Mills, Jr., (Larry) in Tulsa. She was first and foremost a loving mother, wife, gifted homemaker and friend to many. Mrs. Mills was an avid community volunteer. She was active in and on the Board of Directors of Planned Parenthood, The Tulsa Historical Society and The Tulsa Town Hall Council. As a member of the Junior League of Tulsa, she received the award of Sustainer of the Year. Mrs. Mills was the first chair of Philbrook Museum's "Incurable Collector Sale", which initiated a 15-year annual fundraiser for the museum. She was also a Board member of the Tulsa Economic Opportunity Task Force (War on Poverty) in the mid 1960's. She was a member of All Souls Unitarian Church, Southern Hills Country Club and the Will Durant Study Club. Mrs. Mills is survived by: her son, John Lawrence Mills, III and wife, Sloane of Atlanta, GA; and her daughter, Virginia Mills Broberg and her husband, Orrin Broberg of Minneapolis, MN. She is also survived by 5 grandchildren, Adele and Hayden Broberg and Mary Pate, Virginia and John Lawrence Mills, IV. Mrs. Mills was predeceased by: her parents, Virginia and Dr. J.O. Lowe; sister, Corinne L. Collins; and most recently, her husband of 50 years, John Lawrence Mills, Jr. A Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, November 2, 2006, at All Souls Unitarian Church, 2952 S. Peoria, Tulsa. Memorial contributions can be made in Mrs. Mills name to the American Cancer Society or the charity of their choice. Published in the Tulsa World on 10/29/2006.
