Austin Services: Monday, July 7, 9 a.m. Graveside funeral services will be held in the West Side District Cemetery on Monday morning at 9:00 a.m., for Taft resident, Roy C. Austin, 76. Mr. Austin was born in Oklahoma on January 2, 1927, and passed away in a Bakersfield hospital on July 2, 2003. Mr. Austin was raised and educated in Taft and attended Taft Union High School. He served his country as a member of the U.S. Navy during World War II and during the Korean Conflict. He had been employed at various electric companies in Bakersfield before going to work as an electrician/chief maintenance man for Bakersfield City School District. He was employed by the District for over 15 years. Mr. Austin retired at age 55 and the Austins then moved to Kernville where they lived until 14 years ago when they returned to Taft. Mr. Austin was always willing to give a helping hand to elderly folks with their household chores. He was a volunteer at the West Kern Oil Museum. He is survived by his wife, Hazel Austin of Taft; his daughter, Debbie Austin of Bakersfield; his sister, Betty Crawford of Lake Havasu, AZ; his grandchildren, Melissa and Crystal Laughlin of Bakersfield and his great- grandson, Riley Austin. No visitation hours are scheduled.
