Costner, who had been suffering from ill health, died Wednesday at his Windsor home. He was born in Oklahoma and came to California with his family as a toddler when they went in search of a better life, said his granddaughter, Danel Cattalini, of Windsor. He lived more than 50 years in Sonoma County, but also spent many years along the North Coast, including Fort Bragg and Eureka. He served in the Air Force and worked several jobs over the years, including as a tree surgeon, a radio disc jockey and a real estate agent and landlord. While selling property, Costner became interested in buying old homes and fixing them up for sale or rent. "He knew how to do everything," Cattalini said. "He could take the worst case skeleton of a home, and turn it into something totally livable." Costner and his wife, Ethel, of 53 years, raised four children. For several decades the couple lived in an historic home in Windsor, which once was a restaurant, bar and gas station. Costner had a beautiful voice and loved playing in his band, the County Joe Perry Band, his granddaughter said. Costner also was a longtime member of the Windsor Grange. He also is survived by his daughters, Sharon Lea Clark and Denise Brandt, both of Santa Rosa; sons, David Costner, of Santa Rosa and Eric Costner, of Windsor; sister, Marie Redford, of Santa Rosa and five grandchildren. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Monday at Fred Young & Co., in Cloverdale. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Olive Hill Cemetery in Geyserville. Memorial donations may be made to a favorite local charity. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Unknown County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/okstate.html
