Carlton, 88, of Amarillo died Wednesday, May 22, 2002, in Canyon. Services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday in Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors Memorial Chapel, Fifth Avenue and Pierce Street. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Mr. Carlton was born July 17, 1913, in Dalhart, to William Edward "Ed" Carlton and Daisy Matthews Carlton. He was the sixth of seven children born to the family. They soon moved to Oklahoma where his dad bought a farm and began cattle ranching. In 1940 he joined the Oklahoma Army National Guard. Thus began a distinguished career of service to his family, his community and his country. As a member of 1st Battalion, HQ Company, 179th Infantry, he served two years stateside and three years in Europe during World War II. He was proud to be a veteran, but his service did not end there. In 1990 he began a distinguished career as a volunteer at Veterans Administration Medical Center. In April 2002, he was recognized for his more than 17,500 hours of devoted volunteer service to other military men and women who came to the Amarillo VA. He was fiercely proud of his country and his service in the Armed Forces. He moved to Amarillo in 1957. There he met and married his beloved, Gladys "Jewell." They were married on Nov. 10, 1959, and lived on East 10th Avenue in Amarillo for 30 years. It was here they shared their lives, a mutual passion for baseball and football, and he advocated for his political beliefs and campaigned for various candidates. He was a man who quite literally "walked his talk" participating in many walk-a-thons for American Diabetes Association and National Multiple Sclerosis Society. During these years, he worked for the City of Amarillo Water Department and Northwest Texas Medical Center. In 1982, he quit his job to care for his wife and continued his tradition of service. He was a devoted and adoring caregiver until her passing in 1989. He will be remembered by those who knew and loved him as a man who loved his wife, his family and his country. His ready smile and love for people and life will be missed. Survivors include J.D. and Kay Frakes of Happy, and their children, John and Sherri Frakes; Maxene and Frank Lovell of Grand Terrace, Calif., her children, Donell and Douglas Jansen and grandchildren, Sheila Johnson and Jennifer Kyle, Ray and Mardee Myers of Myrtle Creek, Ore., their children, Raylene Eilers, Douglas Myers, Dr. Dale R. Myers, and Debra Hopkins and grandchildren, Elisa Dalenius and Taylor Eilers.
