Carpenter 1918 - 2007 George D. Carpenter passed away on June 2, 2007. He had been ill for the last two years and lived in an assisted living home at first and later in a nursing home. He was born in 1918 in Oklahoma. When the Great Depression came, he left there with his parents, Victor and Sadie Carpenter, in 1935, traveling to Arizona where he stayed only a few months, then on to Visalia. By 1940 he was working on the Roeben Brothers Ranch, west of Visalia and remained there during the World War II years. In 1941, he married Mildred M. Lansford. Their only child, Darrell, was born a year later. In 1945, he and his family moved to Wasco in Kern County where he began a lengthy career in trucking, hauling mostly potatoes and gypsum. As George's business expanded, he moved to Brawley in Imperial County where greater opportunities lay. There he incorporated his business and bought more trucks to engage in hauling sugar beets, hay and gravel. Gravel was used to cover plastic pipe drain tile in the enormous agricultural fields owned by large corporate farmers. When he retired in 1983, he sold his trucking business but stayed in Brawley where he had purchased a home in 1969. His wife died in 1995. His son who continued to live with his father died suddenly in 2000 at age 58. Although George gradually developed dementia starting in 1999, he continued to live in his home off and on until it was sold in 2005. He took great pleasure in going to the Indian Casino in Yuma, Arizona several time weekly, accompanied by his close companion, Patricia Buford of Brawley. George's only brother, Lloyd, and two sisters, Berdine Scow and Nedra Allen preceded him in death. Surviving relatives in Visalia and Exeter are John Allen, Nova Edgar, William Allen, Kathy Moore, Carolyn Wilson and many young nephews and nieces. Burial will be at the Visalia Cemetery.
