Freetly Passed away at his home in Petaluma on November 30th, 2006 after a courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife and best friend of 48 years Marlene Freetly; son Harvey C. Freetly, Hastings, Nebraska; daughter Shelley Blotter, Minden, Nevada; grandchildren James Freetly, Thomas Freetly, and Kelsey Blotter; and sister Jean McCubbin, Dubuque, Iowa. A native of Oklahoma, his family (parents and sister) immigrated to California in 1943 ultimately settling in Lodi. Harvey was a 1954 graduate of Lodi High School and furthered his education at Stockton Junior College and graduated in 1959 from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo receiving a B.S. in Farm Management. In 1961, Harvey became a ranch manager in Nicasio, California where he lived with Marlene and their children. During this time, Harvey also became a property appraiser for the County of Marin, Assessor's Office. In 1976, the Freetly family moved to Petaluma where in 1983 Harvey established his own commercial/ industrial/ agricultural property appraisal business. Harvey is remembered by many for his advocacy and mentoring of youth. He was a 4-H Leader for 25 years and served on the FFA Advisory Council. Harvey was a proud member of Petaluma Rotary and achieved many awards for his service. He was honored as the 2005-2006 District Rotarian of the Year, 2002-2003 Meritorious Service Award recipient, the 1999- 2000 Petaluma Rotarian of the Year, along with countless other awards. He was nicknamed "Mr. Dictionary" for his effort in creating a Rotary program that distributes dictionaries to Petaluma third graders. Started six years ago, The Dictionary Program has been replicated by Rotary Clubs throughout the United States and has received international recognition. Harvey will be missed by all who knew him, but his legacy lives on through his "gift of words," the dictionary project. He was 70 years of age. Private graveside services will be held in Lodi. A Memorial Service will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church, Petaluma on Thursday, December 7th at 11:00 a.m., followed by a Celebration of Life at Herzog Hall, Petaluma Fairgrounds. The family prefers memorial contributions be made to the Petaluma Rotary Foundation, P.O. Box 5655 Petaluma, CA 94955, the American Cancer Society, or favorite charity of your choice.
