Services will be conducted by one of her sons, Duane Garrett. Clara Mae Garrett was born in Paris, Texas, on May 28, 1919, to Joseph and Mickey Steele. She was the youngest of three daughters. Her family soon moved to Oklahoma and there she lived until moving to California in 1944. She assisted the troops during World War II by working as a riveter on the aircraft used in the war. Though she worked outside the home at times, her role as wife, mother, grandma and aunt was her life and passion. She enjoyed having a vegetable garden and continued raising a garden until the last year of her life. Many times she would go to her garden to pick vegetables for the evening dinner. She loved her tomatoes and purple hulled peas. She also enjoyed making quilts and giving them to her family. She and her good friend, Ollie Foster, would visit and spend many hours planning the next quilting project. Due to failing health recently she was unable to quilt but still enjoyed the company of her good friend Ollie. She always wanted to make sure no one left her home hungry and was ever eager to make a little something for her family and friends. No one made biscuits and gravy like Grandma. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Ethel Rae, husband, Floyd Garrett and two of her sons, Joseph and Dale Gibson. She is survived by Gertrude Duncan a sister that resides in Northern California; daughter, Shirley Garrett of Lake Isabella; and son and daughter-in-law, Duane and Anita Garrett of Bakersfield. She had several grandchildren, great- grandchildren and even great-great-grandchildren. We are saddened that she departed this life only a few weeks before the birth of two more great- grandchildren. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and dear friends whom she loved. She dearly loved Michelle Binning the mother of four of her grandchildren, Jason, Christopher, Ryan and Shantille all of whom she cherished. Mom lived with Duane, Anita and granddaughters, Katie and Madison the last six years of her life and was blessed to have Anita care for her medical needs and keep Mom with us a little longer, so we could be blessed by her presence. She appreciated the help of Sue Ocker and Pam Gibson, wife of Scott Gibson one of the grandsons, who often helped her with her daily needs. Mom enjoyed the constant companionship of Madison Stinky, the youngest of her grandchildren who would take over the remote control and make grandma watch hours of cartoons. Grandma loved it and all the times she shared with her grandchildren who came to visit. The family would like to take this opportunity to extend a warm wish of gratitude to Dr. Jennifer Abraham who has been a wonderful example of a caring physician and friend of the family. Services will be Wednesday, February 12, at 10:00 a.m. with Visitation on Tuesday, February 11, from 3-7 p.m., at Hillcrest Memorial Park & Mortuary. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Unknown County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/okstate.html
