"BILL" HAGLE Published on August 22, 2000 The Santa Rosa Press Democratt William T. "Bill" Hagle liked to keep abreast of current events. He subscribed to Newsweek, U.S. News & World Report, several other magazines, two daily newspapers and a local weekly newspaper, and even had an Oklahoma paper shipped to him so he could follow the happenings in the state where he spent his childhood. "My dad watched world affairs programs on television and liked to listen to talk radio shows," said his daughter, Betty Smart of Graton. "He could carry on a conversation on any topic." Bill Hagle, 87, died Aug. 8 at the Graton home he'd shared with his wife, Minnie, who also died at home in 1992. The two had been childhood sweethearts. They met in grade school, lived on neighboring farms in Oklahoma, and were married there in 1933. Hagle, born in Texas, moved to west Sonoma County in 1951 after living in other parts of the country, residing in Sebastopol before settling in Graton. "He was a hard-working man," said Smart. "When Mom and Dad were first married he was a farmer. He finished his military service in the Army before World War II, so during the war he worked at a Hollywood studio as a prop man. We were living in the San Fernando Valley at that time." He was a member of the laborer's union and did road work with the Stroco Construction Company in Santa Rosa. A freak accident ended his working career in the early 1970s when a gas can exploded in his hand, blowing him backward into a ditch and causing severe injury to his neck. His physical activity limited by injury, Hagle became an avid reader. He loved books by Tom Clancy and John Grisham, said Smart, and read a wide variety of fiction. Hagle is survived by his daughters, Betty Smart and Mary Miller of Graton; his sons and daughters-in-law, Bob and Altheda Hagle and John and Cynthia Hagle of Graton, and Jimmie and Judy Hagle and Charles and Linda Hagle of Santa Rosa; his brother, Truman Hagle of Crocket, Texas; his brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Brenda Hagle of Modesto; his sisters, Bonnie Coonce of Ceres and Viola Throton of Pinole; 13 grandchildren; 22 great- grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Services were Aug. 12 at Pleasant Hills Memorial Park and Mortuary, Sebastopol, followed by interment at Gilliam Cemetery, Graton. The family suggests memorial contributions to a favorite charity. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Unknown County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/okstate.html
