He was 81. Haltom, born in Mills, N.M., lived in Oklahoma before moving to Santa Rosa with his parents in the mid-1920s. He attended Santa Rosa High School and began a career as a plumber at age 17. He worked as a pipefitter on submarines at Mare Island during World War II, and later was a foreman on the construction of the state hospital at Talmadge in the 1950s. He was a member of Local 38 of the Plumbers Union. Haltom loved to work, said his wife, Ethel. "In all our married years I never heard him say, "I really don't want to go to work today."' he said. He moved his family to Ukiah in 1952, and worked in Mendocino County until health problems forced him to retire in 1974. Two years later, he moved to Mountain Grove, Mo. In rural Missouri, he became intrigued with a nearby Amish community. He befriended some of the Amish and learned how to build the sturdy horse- drawn buggies that are their principal mode of transportation. "He could build anything," said his brother, Bob, who lives in Santa Rosa. "He was real clever with his hands." Besides his brother and his wife of 55 years, who lives in Mountain Grove, Haltom is survived by two daughters, Cherri Alfini of Colorado and Linda Abranya of Santa Barbara; son, Tom Haltom of Chester; sisters, Eunice Catledge of San Jose, Ruby Fowler of Santa Rosa and Wilma Turney of Clearlake Oaks; five grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. The family plans a memorial service Aug. 9 in Midas, Nev., where Haltom had a mountain cabin. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Unknown County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/okstate.html
