Services will be held Wednesday, August 24, 2005, 11:00 a.m., at McGilley State Line Chapel, 12301 State Line Road, Kansas City, MO. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 23rd, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m., at McGilley State Line Chapel, Cremation. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Christ Community Church, 7801 East Kenyon Drive, Tucson, AZ, 85710, (520) 296-8501. Ralston was born November 6, 1918, in New Brunswick, NJ. Ralston received the nickname "R squared" while enrolling in Purdue University from which he graduated in 1939 and then joined the United States Marine Corp. Ralston was discharged in 1946 as Lieutenant Colonel. He attended Harvard Medical School and graduated in 1950. From 1950 - 1952 he was a surgery resident at Kansas University Medical Center. From 1952 - 65 Ralston was in rural general practice in Sentinel, OK. From 1965 - 1997 Ralston was mostly at St. Joseph Health Center. For retirement, Ralston moved to Tucson. He met Lucy Demoret while attending Purdue University. They were married in 1941 and had six children. In 1970, he married Rita Kay Jackson, who passed away in 1993. Ralston was the third President of the American College of Emergency Physicians, Fourth President of American Board of Emergency Medicine. In 1971, he received the Award of Honor of the American Hospital Association & Honorary Life Member. He was a Vice President of the Oklahoma State Medical Society and a Past President of the Medical Staff at St. Joseph Health Center. He was an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Oklahoma Medical School and an Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at Northwestern University Medical School. Ralston was a founder and developer of the Specialty of Emergency Medicine. In June of 2004, he received the Mulroy Award from Northwestern University Medical Residency Program for founding the 5th Emergency Medicine Residency Program in 1973 at Evanston Hospital. In April of 2002, he purchased Montgomery's Irish Pub in Tucson, AZ, and after managing it for a year, sold it in 2003. This was his third career. "R2" was a big sports fan, especially of the Purdue Boilermakers and the Chicago Cubs. He was an avid tennis player and a member of the Homestead Country Club and the Overland Park Racquet Club. Ralston was a world traveler and visited every continent on several occasions. Ralston is survived by five children, Mike Hannas and his wife, Joan, Alexandria, VA; Jake Hannas and his wife, Carol, Overland Park, KS; Andy Hannas, LaFayette, IN; Molly Hannas, Tybee Island, GA; Polly Hannas Silverman and her husband, Jon, San Jose, CA. He is also survived by two brothers, Warren Hannas and his wife, Julie, Thompson's Station, TN and Allan Hannas and wife, Joan, Fredon, NJ. He also leaves three grandchildren, John Hannas, Alexandria, VA; Michelle Hannas Crabtree and her husband, John, Alexandria, VA and Andrew Jacob Silverman, San Jose, CA. Ralston was preceded in death by his wife, Rita Kay Hannas in 1993; daughter, Margaret Hannas in 1949 and sister, Harriet Hannas in 1922.
