Heard Retired School Teacher July 21, 1922 June 6, 2003 Cora Montgomery Heard was born in Oklahoma. Her family moved to Bakersfield when she was five years old and she attended Beardsley School through the 8th grade. Cora graduated from Kern H.S. District in 1939, continuing on to Bakersfield College and then proceeded to Fresno State College, graduating with a B.A. in Education. Cora returned to Beardsley School teaching Kindergarten, to which she was devoted. She stayed long after school hours preparing for the following school day, all the while implementing creative teaching techniques for which she was commended many times by loving children and parents. Cora was admired by her colleagues and principals, working on and off at the same Beardsley school for 30 years before she retired. During WWII she would give of her time in the USO, which was in the Elks Lodge on 17th Street. It was on a Sunday morning in 1945 that U.S. Marine Tim Heard came through the doors and was struck by her beauty and personality. Following the war, Tim sent her a ring in the mail and asked her to marry him in the city of New York. Following the birth of their first born child Maureen, they moved to Bakersfield in 1948 where their other daughters, Kathryn and Adriane, were born. Cora and Tim enjoyed a host of friends in the Toastmasters, Kiwanis, Elks, EB Lions, and people in the Life Insurance industry. Cora was devoted to creating a touch of beauty to her home and garden. She was imbued with caring for family and others. Cora also loved to sew, and was a creative cook. Hospitality was her gift and for 30 years Cora and Tim hosted 4th of July parties at their home. She is survived by husband Tim Heard; daughters and sons-in-law, Maureen and Dan Sheffield of Yucaipa, CA, Kathy and Don Arts of Lincoln, CA and Adriane Booth of Bakersfield; brother, Monty Montgomery of Morro Bay, CA; sisters, Pauline Deane of Walnut Creek, CA, Pat Montgomery of Bakersfield; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Visitation will be Tuesday, June 10 at Greenlawn Mortuary, 3700 River Blvd., noon to 9 p.m. Services will be Wednesday, June 11 at 10 a.m., also at Greenlawn Chapel with graveside services following.
