'Chuck' Kidd Charles R. 'Chuck' Kidd, 83, of Camarillo died on Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004, after a brief illness. Chuck continued his education at Northwest Oklahoma Junior College in Tonkawa, Okla., and then attended Phillips University in Enid, Okla. His college education was interrupted by World War II, when he joined the U.S. Navy the day after Pearl Harbor; however, he had to have his parent's consent, since he was not yet of age. Thus began a long, successful and varied career in the Navy. After 21 1/2 years, in June of 1963, Chuck retired with the rank of lieutenant. Chuck also had an illustrious career working for the State of California in Sacramento for four years, and then for 17 years he was the assistant to the medical director of Camarillo State Hospital, retiring in 1984. Chuck was active in Camarillo United Methodist Church, where he served as a Reading Angel in a tutorial reading program. He also served on the administrative board of the church and as an usher. Chuck was active in the Elks Club of Oxnard and the local Big Brothers organization. He was an active member of the Retired Officers Club, where he served as treasurer for many years as well as president. He enjoyed cooking, gardening, playing bridge and doing crossword puzzles. Chuck is survived by his wife, Mary Elaine; his son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Kathryn Kidd of Camarillo; his daughters and sons-in-law, Christine and Frederick Martin of Camarillo, and Janice and Erick Diehl of Camarillo; father-in-law, Harold Davidson of Camarillo; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; brother Harold Kidd of Plainview, Texas; sisters Midge Collins of Tulsa, Okla., and Deanie Corder of Lees Summit, Mo.; sister- and brother-in-law, Nancy and Mike Nicholes of Camarillo. There are numerous nieces and nephews. Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, J.W. and Mabel Kidd, and six brothers and sisters. A time of visitation and viewing will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 29, at Pierce Bros. Griffin Memorial Chapel, Camarillo. A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 30, at Camarillo United Methodist Church, 291 Anacapa Drive, Camarillo, with the burial to follow at Conejo Mountain Memorial Park.
