At the age of 88, she had experienced more of the world than many of her generation or those that have followed. Her life began in Oklahoma in 1915, but she would grow up in Southern California, returning to the Sooner state during the 1930's. In 1936, she began a loving marriage to Jeff Sparger. His military career in the U.S. Army would send them across America and the world. Traveling would be her life long passion. Together they raised three children on the move. Upon Jeff's sudden death in 1961, while living at White Sand's Missile Range in New Mexico, Ruth took on the task of raising three teenagers on her own, working as a hospital administrator. In 1965 she married Lon Lytton, a cotton researcher, living and farming in Mexico. Another long and happy union was the result. They retired to El Paso, TX in 1972, where she was widowed a second time in 1984. Ruth lived in El Paso until 1999 when she came to Fresno to be closer to family. San Joaquin Gardens became her home. It brought an abundance of new friends and new experiences to a long life already filled with many. She is survived by her three children and their families, Nancy Osborne and Rance Giehl of Fresno, Bill and Cheryl Sparger of Colorado Springs, CO, and Jim Sparger of Sugar Grove, NC; granddaughter, Rachel and her husband, Casey Carter of Fresno; two great-granddaughters, Channing and Holland Gibson, also of Fresno; and granddaughter, Amber Wheeler of Colorado Springs. Join us in celebrating Ruth's life at the Fellowship Hall of San Joaquin Gardens, 5555 N. Fresno St., on Monday, January 26, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. Remembrances may be made to The St. Agnes Foundation, 1111 Spruce, Fresno, CA 93720.
