Travis was born October 19, 1924 in La Mesa, Texas the eldest of five children. Our beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend went gently to be with his Lord and Savior on March 4, 2006 in Bakersfield, California. Travis is preceded in death by his wife, Ada Lou; parents, Bert and Alva McKinney; brother, Kenneth and his sister, Berthine. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Marc and Noreen McKinney; daughter and son-in-law, Melanie and Jim Thompson; grandchildren, Angela, Sam, Aaron, Amanda and David; brother, Harold McKinney of Louisiana; sister, Clarene Handy of Bakersfield as well as many nieces and nephews. Travis grew up during the Great Depression and went to work at a very young age in order to help his family. Eventually his family moved to Oklahoma where he met his wife of nearly 60 years, Ada Lou Rice. Shortly after marrying, Travis entered the Army Aircorp at the age of 18 and he spent two years overseas during World War II where he proudly served his beloved country. Travis served in Italy and North Africa. Upon discharge, Travis and Ada moved to Long Beach where he began a life long career in the oilfields. They eventually settled in Bakersfield and Travis worked all over Kern County's oilfields. The finest years of his career were spent working for LeBow and LeBow as production supervisor until he retired. For many years, Travis was a faithful member of Hillcrest Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School and served the Lord in many different capacities. During these years, he and Ada made many life long friends. Travis taught his young family Christian life and values. His family grew over the years and were the recipient of his unconditional love. Travis witnessed to both friend and stranger by his kind and humble nature. He never met a stranger. He was slow to anger and quick to praise and loved by all that knew him. He will never be forgotten. A special thanks to the Castro family, Marlene, Dr. Michael Thorpe and Evelyn, Dr. Waguespack, Doug Davis and John Basham for the kindness and support they provided to Travis and his family during his last years and at this difficult time. His family will treasure his love always and will someday rejoice when we are all together again in God's kingdom.
