All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== Bakersfield Californian Dick Marshall Services: Wed., May 29, 11 a.m. Dick Marshall, 65, of Atascadero, passed away Wednesday, May 22, 2002 at home with his wife Margaret at his side. Visitation will be held Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at Chapel of the Roses. Services will be held Wednesday May 29, 2002 at 11 a.m. at Chapel of the Roses in Atascadero; Dr. David Hixon will officiate. James Alexander will give the eulogy. Following the service final disposition will take place at Pine Mountain Cemetery (Atascadero District Cemetery) with Military Honors. Dick was born in Oklahoma on September 16, 1936 to Hazel and John Marshall. The family moved to Bakersfield when he was 5 years old. He attended Lowell Elementary, Emerson Jr. High and graduated from Bakersfield High School in 1955. After high school he attended Bakersfield Jr. College. He was very active in all sports. He lettered in football, basketball and track. Dick also held the record for many years in the broad jump. He was named top athlete his senior year. Dick was in Life Magazine in 1960 as a result of the Cal Poly football team plane crash. Two of his childhood friends were on board and he was a pallbearer for both services. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1956 to 1958. He became a latherer, plasterer, and a drywaller in 1961. He worked in Bakersfield and the central coast for 40 years. He worked on several homes for entertainers, building the Echo Chambers for Merle Haggards recording studio in Bakersfield. He was a great fan of Neil Diamond, his favorite song was Sweet Caroline. He loved to drive his tractor and work on his land. He was a kind loving man and he deeply touched many of us. He will be missed very much. He belonged to the Atascadero Trail Riders, Atascadero Moose Lodge, Atascadero Elks Lodge and VFW Post 2814 in Atascadero. Donations may be sent to the American Heart Association at 1371 Pacific Street, San Luis Obispo, CA 93401. Dick is preceded in death by his parents, Hazel and John Marshall, brothers, Laverne and Kenneth Simpson and John Marshall, his dear and loving son Michael. Survivors include his wife Margaret Marshall of Atascadero; son Ronnie Marshall and partner Michael Selby of West Hollywood; sister-in-law Jane Marshall of Atascadero; mother-in-law Marie Kovacs of Atascadero; sisters, Willa Zremer, Geneva (Larry) Waertz, Judy Chapman and Frances Chambers all of Bakersfield and Jackie Ritzer of Burlingame; brother and sister-in-law Floyd Simpson and Shirley of Indiana; Chuckie Swan of Bakersfield; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great- nephews.
