MacSWEENY July 17, 1926 January 13, 2007 Lila Lee MacSweeney passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, January 13, 2007, while under the care of family members and Hinds Hospice personnel. She was 80 years old. A longtime resident of California, Lila's roots were in Oklahoma but she moved west at an early age with her mother, Estella Smith, and younger siblings. She helped raise her sister and two brothers, later marrying the love of her life, John MacSweeney, who died in 1973. Lila was a quiet giver, always looking out for family members and others who needed a helping hand. Her wisdom was frequently sought and she offered it with a generosity that was never imposing. Lila was just there whenever anyone needed her. An early supporter of Nancy Hinds and the hospice program she founded, Lila preferred a low profile in her giving, but many felt her touch. She leaves a legacy of kindness. As her health began to fail, caring family members responded by taking turns staying with her at home and handling her personal affairs. She had no children of her own, but was surrounded by adoring nephews and nieces. One nephew, Warren Douglas Smith, assumed responsibility as her primary caregiver and remained at her side through her final days. Lila worked for Allenberg Cotton Co. and Thomas E. Avent Co. for more than 35 years. She was an icon in the cotton industry, known for her depth of knowledge, meticulous record-keeping and keen wit. She was preceded in death by her brother, Al Smith; sister, Pat Hall; and niece, Deidre Hall. She is survived by her brother, Ron Smith and his daughters Becky and Jennifer; nephews, Richard Smith, Warren Douglas Smith, Gerald Smith, Sean Smith, Ron Smith and Randy Spinoza Hall; niece, Laurie Burnett; and great-niece, Mia Kinappel. A Memorial Service will be held at Our Savior's Lutheran Church at 2101 N. Fruit on Friday, January 19, 2007, at 3:00 p.m. Remembrances may be made to Hinds Hospice, 1616 W. Shaw, Fresno, CA 93711.
