Jane, as she was known by family and friends, had just celebrated her 82nd birthday on January 7. A long- time PG resident, Jane was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Jim, in 1992 and is survived by her three sons, Jim, Tom and Bill and five grandchildren: Justin, Scott, Andrea, Casey and Jonathan and her sister, Faye Deane Horder. Ida Jane (Stepp) was born and raised in a small town in Oklahoma. Her grandfather was one of the Oklahoma "Sooners," but chose to stay rather than head further west. Jane moved to Pacific Grove in 1945, where she worked at the Hovden Cannery, now the site of the Monterey Bay Aquarium on Cannery Row. Jane met her future husband Jim, a popular meat cutter and star football player at Monterey High, at a Hovden Company picnic. The couple soon wed and settled initially in Monterey. After the birth of their son Jim in 1949, they moved to Pacific Grove. Jane's driving desire was to be a loving and devoted wife and mother – a goal she surpassed daily. Not only was Jane a doting mother and grandmother, but also was truly the family matriarch. She lovingly filled the role of "Nona", friend, counselor, innkeeper, kennel-keeper and everything else asked of her by her children and grandchildren. Jane was very popular in the local community and had many cherished friendships on the Peninsula. She always believed in helping others and gave much of her time as a volunteer, beginning with the USO during World War II and in her later years as a volunteer at CHOMP. Jane was also active in the PG schools and youth baseball programs. One of her fondest memories was being one of the founding members of the Pacific Grove High Breakers Club. Much like her infamous white-flocked Christmas trees brightened the lives of those who passed her house each holiday season, Jane's kindness, generosity and loving nature brightened the lives of everyone who knew her. We will miss you Ida Jane. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Angela Merici Church in Pacific Grove on Thursday, January 18, 2007 at 2:00 PM. Burial will take place at El Carmelo Cemetery, also in Pacific Grove, on Friday, January 19, 2007 at 10:00 AM under the direction of The Paul Mortuary. Donations may be made in Jane's memory to either the SPCA, P.O. Box 3058, Monterey, CA 93942 or the Breakers Club, c/o Pacific Grove High School, 615 Sunset Dr., Pacific Grove, CA 93950. Published in the Monterey Herald on 1/17/2007. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Unknown County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/okstate.html
