Sanders Services: Wed., Oct. 9, 11 a.m. Graveside services will be held in Greenlawn Memorial Park, 3700 River Blvd., for John R. Sanders, 84, who passed away October 6, 2002. Pastor Doug Davis of Calvary Bible Church will officiate. Visitation will be today from 4-8 p.m. John was born on November 12, 1917, in Oklahoma. He loved the southwest, living many years in Texas and New Mexico. He was Staff Sergeant in the 91st Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron of the U.S. Army in World War II, serving in Tunisia, Sicily, Naples and Rome, and was awarded the Purple Heart in August 1944. John had been a resident of Kern County for over 50 years, having worked at Cal Portland Cement in Tehachapi, Ca. John was preceded in death by his parents and siblings; his wife of 40 years, Ayzell Sanders and his stepgrandson, Rodger Spradlin of Corpus Christi, TX. He is survived by his stepdaughters, Yvonne Paxton and husband, Bob of Bakersfield and Sybil Spradlin and husband, Bill of Washington; stepson, Dempsey Copeland and wife, Berneice of La Jolla; stepgrandchildren, Brian Paxton and wife, Lisa, Laurie Hall and husband, Dave and Janice Stewart all of Bakersfield, Gloria Van Wagner and husband, Lee of Santa Paula, CA and Craig Copeland of Pacifica, CA; step-great- grandchildren, Kaitlin, Andrew, Allie, Erica, Jeff, Matthew, Kristiana and Calvin; step-great-great-granddaughter, Taylor. The family would like to thank all the health care workers at Hearthstone Alzheimer Resident Care for their love and concern for John during the last year. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the charity of your choice.
