Arriving in Bakersfield as an infant, Spike survived the Dust Bowl and resided in the Bakersfield area for the majority of his life. For 25 years Spike served as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. Many of the residents on his route called him the best mailman they ever had. He was known for making great effort to get everyone's mail to them in a timely manner, and for making friends with all of the dogs on his route. Spike, to those who loved him and knew him best, was an avid sports fan and could be seen at nearly every Bakersfield College Football game. He loved baseball, the Dodgers, country music, and his family. Most of all, he was known for loving and supporting his wife, Jo. He lived a long, full life filled with hard work, good friends, and family members who loved him dearly. He will be incredibly missed. Spike is survived by his wife, Josephine Berna; brother, Sol Berna; nephew, Billie Berna; niece, Saundra Hernon; daughters, Nancy Harris and Janet Kuhs; grandchildren, Juli Cote, Melissa Kuhs, Natalie Hewitt and Paul Kuhs; great grandchildren, Kylie Kuhs and Benjamin Cote. Many thanks are due to those who have been so supportive during the past few difficult months: Valley Baptist Church, Pastor Larry, BSF group, and members and staff who have volunteered their time and prayers to make this process easier; the staff and nurses in CCU at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital who loved and cared for Spike to the very end, we are so grateful for you; Dr. Derrick and Dr. Hansa, thank you so much for all of the time that you spent caring for Spike and his family. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m., on Thursday, March 23rd, at Basham Funeral Home. Graveside service will be held at Greenlawn Memorial Park (River Blvd.) on Friday, March 24th at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please send a monetary donation in Spike's name to his favorite football team, the Bakersfield College Renegades.
