L. Helton, 35 years old Fairfax garage owner, were killed when the plane in which they were flying crashed into a canyon. 10 miles west of Fairfax at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 13. Witnesses said that the motor stalled at 1,000 feet and the ship went into a tall spin. Both bodies were badly mangled and the plane was demolished. Helton is survived by a widow and three children. Boone was not married. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Boone of Cushing. During the last few months Boone had been teaching flying to a number of citizens in Hominy, Stillwater, Cushing and Fairfax. Helton was one of 10 in his present classes. Young Boone and his parents resided in Hominy several years ago and he was a student in the city schools here. A year ago he was a sophomore at the A. and M. college at Stillwater and quit school to take up flying at the Stillwater airport. He was taught by R. P. Shannon, a commercial pilot, and several months ago bought Shannan's Swallow biplane and took it to Cushing. Last week Boone proposed to the Cushing chamber of commerce that I finance him in a flying school to be established there. A committee had been appointed to investigate Boone's proposition. He was a well known state flyer and was one of the principal boosters for the Cushing airport, the management of which, it was said Wednesday, possibly was to go to him at its completion. Helton had been taking instruction for six weeks and had approximately four flying hours to his credit. Mrs. T. J. Colley and Mrs. W. E. Schwaba went to Cushing Thursday to be with the stricken family of the young aviator. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Osage County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/osage/osage.htm
