He was the son of Richard Frederick Burt, Sr. and Ella V. (House) Burt. Richard moved with his family at an early age to Glenpool where he attended school, graduating from Glenpool High School in 1940. He resided with his parents in New York City during the summer months for a few years as his father was completing his Master's Degree at Columbia University. Upon graduation from high school, Richard attended the University of Oklahoma. He married his friend and sweetheart, whom he had known since the age of four, Mary Joyce 'Jodie' Aab on June 6, 1943 in Glenpool. Richard was a decorated aviator during World War II, serving as a First Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps. He served as an instructor pilot before transferring overseas where he earned the Army Air Medal for flying cargo over the Himalayas (Hump) between India and China. Upon his release from active duty, Richard continued to serve his country as a reserve pilot in the United States Air Force until 1957. Returning to Oklahoma after completion of active duty, Richard attended the University of Tulsa Law School where he received his Juris Doctor Degree. He was then employed as an Assistant District Attorney in Tulsa County. After a few years as a prosecuting attorney, Richard entered into private practice, having offices in both Tulsa and Cleveland. Richard served as the Chief Counsel for Indian Electric Cooperative in Cleveland for many years. Richard was a past president of the Tulsa Bar association, a member of the Pawnee County and American Bar Associations. He closed his practice in Tulsa in 1997 but has continued to practice law in his Cleveland office until the time of his most recent illness. Richard was a member of the Boston Avenue Methodist Church since the early 1950's, a long time member of the rotary Club in Tulsa and then Cleveland, and was a 32nd Degree Mason. Richard passed away on Wed., Feb. 14, 2001 at the age of 79 after a brief illness. He will be remembered as a prominent northeastern Oklahoma attorney, practicing law for over fifty years. He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife of fifty-seven years, Jodie. His is survived by three daughters, Dr. Lynna Ausburn of Keystone Lake, Mary Ella Holway of Bar Harbor, Maine and Major Margaret Kohut, USAG of Wright Paterson Air Force Base, Ohio. He is also survived by his sons-in- law, Dr. Floyd Ausburn and Lt. Col. (Dr.) Tristan Kohut; three grandchildren and one great-grandson. Mr. Burt was a 32nd Degree Mason and will be sorely missed by a host of close friends and family. Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. Tues., Feb. 20, 2001 at the Chapman-Black Chapel in Cleveland.
