All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ===================================================================== The Hominy News Progress Vol. 35, No. 21 Wednesday, May 22, 2002 Page 5 Joseph Harvey Comer, Jr. Joseph Harvey Comer, Jr., died Oct. 31, 2001, at the age of 92 in Torrance, CA. Joseph is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Comer. He was a 46 year resident of Mento Park, CA., before moving to Rancho Palos Verdes in 1996. After graduating from Hominy High School in 1926, Joseph went on to study engineering at the University of Oklahoma and continued his study of the field until his retirement. He worked as a Civil/Structural Engineer for Bechtel Corporation in San Francisco for 40 years, staying on by request ten years after the mandatory retirement age of 65, finally retiring in 1983. His engineering career began with Patterson Street in Tulsa in 1931. A depression-era layoff provided the opportunity to co-skipper the "Spirit of Depression" for one-month raft trip down the Arkansas and Mississippi Rivers from Tulsa to New Orleans. His engineering career spanned 56 years with positions in Mobile, Alabama, Tennessee Valley Authority, Muskogee Iron Works in Muskogee. The Panama Canal Zone in 1939, Knoxville, Pearl Harbor in 1942 and finally, Bechtel Corporation in San Francisco. Joseph married Dorothy Lou Hopper of San Francisco in 1946 and together they moved with their two children to Mento Park. She passed away in 1968. During his life he enjoyed great music, hunting, woodworking, fishing and backpacking with his family in the High Sierras, favoring golf and sailing in later years. He is survived by his son, Edward J. Comer, of Sulsun, CA., his daughter, J. Lynn Comer of Rancho Palos Veerdes; four brothers and sisters as wel as many nieces and nephews.
