He was born June 13, 1918 in Foraker, Oklahoma, the son of Ben and Ollie (Workman) Johnson, Sr. August 31, 1941, he married Carol Elaine Jones, who preceded him in death on March 27, 1994. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Ollie Ride of Mesa; a sister and brother-in- law, Helen and Dale Christenson of Pawhuska, Oklahoma; a niece, Ann Whitehorn of Pawhuska; seven nephews, Dale Christenson, Jr. and Ben Christenson of Pawhuska, Larry Christenson of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Ben Miller of Gilbert, Arizona, John Miller of Cave Creek, Arizona, Dan Jones and Barry Jones, both of California; and numerous great nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Ben was preceded in death by his father, Ben Johnson, Sr., a sister, Mary Ann Miller and step-father, Fred Rider. Ben had acted in dozens of movies since his first in the early fifties ("Mighty Joe Young") winning an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in "The Last Picture Show". Funeral services were held Thursday, April 11, 1996 in the East Valley Free Will Baptist Church, Mesa. Graveside services were held April 14, 1996 in the Pawhuska Cemetery with Reverend Howard Dwartney officiating. Casket bearers in Pawhuska were Dale Christenson, Jr., Ben Christenson, Larry Christenson, Joe Bob Briggs, J.B. Hurd, Allen Lansdown, Jay Barton and Ben Wells. A memorial was established with the Children's Medical Research Hospital in Oklahoma City. Johnson Funeral Directors, Pawhuska, were in charge of the Pawhuska arrangements.
