Mr. Sumter was born October 16, 1930, to Charles and Naomi (Avery) Sumter in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, where he grew up and received his education. He began his career in the construction business in 1949 and worked in various cities throughout the country until his retirement due to ill health in 1996. Survivors include: One son, Jimmy Dee Sumter of Aubrey, Texas; one step-son, Steve Snyder of Barnsdall; two step daughters, Randee Witt and Pam Moore both of Barnsdall; three brothers, Roy Sumber of Mena, Arkansas, James Sumter of Pawhuska and Dee Sumter of Fayetteville, Arkansas; six sisters, Wynona Cole of Palm Springs, California, Johnnie Tanzey of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Tommie Garner of Diamond Head, Mississippi, Bobbie Smith of Pawhuska, Betty Wood of Wichita, Kansas and Jeannie Christie of Santa Fe, new Mexico, four grandsons, Deck Sumter, Aaron Snyder, Alan Witt and Brock Moore and three granddaughters, Rachel Sumter, Nicki Tarwater and Erika Gullett. He was preceded in death by one son, Forrest Daryl Sumter who died in Viet Nam. Funeral services were held February 16, in the Stumpff Funeral Home Chapel in Barnsdall with interment following in the Ethel Reece Cemetery, Barnsdall. Casket escorts included Ted Galligher, Tim Dahl, Tim Henson, Mike Yocham, George Morris and Tom Townley. A memorial was established to the American Cancer Society, c/o Kathy Leeper, P.O. Box 1094, Bartlesville, Oklahoma 74005. Stumpff Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
