CHESHEWALLA OCNS - June 15, 2001 - Esther Q. Cheshewalla, 77, passed away Wednesday, June 13, 2001, in the Jane Phillips Medical Center, Bartlesville, Oklahoma, of cancer. Esther was born July 11, 1923, in Wynona, Oklahoma, the daughter of Franklin and Agnes (Rocque) Quinton and on August 25, 1941, in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, married Jack Russell Cheshewalla who preceded her in death January 14, 1979. For many years, Esther worked as a printer at Ross Martin's of Tulsa, and following the death of her husband, she returned to Pawhuska where she worked as a receptionist for the Osage Nation until her retirement two years ago. Esther was the first Osage Indian woman to serve in the United States Marine Corp, serving her country during World War II, during which time she acquired five hundred hours of flying time. She was Past Commander and a member of American Legion Post 198, a long- standing member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Klash- Kah-She Club, a supporter of the Immaculate Conception Shrine to the Blessed Kateri Tekawitha and also served as a volunteer at Christ's Cupboard. Surviving Mrs. Cheshewalla are: her eight children; Francine, Quinton, Jack r., Jr. (Rusty), Anna, Yvonne, Marjorie, Monika and Louise; her only niece, Susie Mitchell; nineteen grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren and a host of other family and friends. Indian services will be Saturday, June 16, at 9:00 a.m., at the Wakon Iron Hall, Indian Camp, Pawhuska, with Andrew Gray, Jr., conducting the service. Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Saturday at the immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Pawhuska with Father Leonard Higgins officiating. Graveside military services will be accorded by the United States Marine Corp prior to interment in the Pawhuska City Cemetery. Johnson Funeral Home, Pawhuska, is in charge of arrangements.
