Mr. Haney full obituary will be in next week's issue of the Hominy News - Progress. ========= The Hominy News - Progress Vol. 30, No. 3 Wednesday, January 17, 2001 Page 5 Bell Charles Haney (Photo) Bell Charles Haney passed into the arms of Wah-Ken-Tah Tues., Jan. 9, 2001 at the age of 63. He was born July 9, 1937 in Hominy, to Jess and Belle Big Elk Haney. Bell Charles was initiated into the Osage ways in early adulthood with the help of his aunt, Grace Big Elk Crabtree, and remained firmly rooted in the Osage tradition for the remainder of his life. He will be remembered for his generosity and guidance to friends and family and for his love of a good laugh, a good story and many late night discussions. Bell Charles received his early education in Hominy and graduated Valedictorian from Missouri Military Academy in Mexico, Missouri in 1955. He went on to earn his Bachelor's and Master's degrees at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, graduating in 1961. While attending OU, Bell Charles married Leona Mae Lott of Hominy. After graduation he took a job with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation before accepting a position with the Federal Bureau of Indian Affairs, where his hope was to help all Native Americans. His first position with the BIA took the family to Anadarko in 1964, with subsequent moves to agencies in Gallup, New Mexico in 1967 and Parker, Arizona in 1969. Bell Charles transferred back to Oklahoma in 1873, settling in Yukon and serving at agencies in El Reno, Anadarko and Muskogee. He was promoted to Superintendant of the agency in Palm Springs, California before coming home to Oklahoma and heading the Shawnee agency, which he retired from in 1991. Bell Charles was preceeded in death by his parents, and brothers Wayne and Bill. He is survived by his sisters Oney Kay of Kansas, Sharon of Edmond, brother Robert of Miami, and stepmother Aileen Haney of Hominy. He also leaves behind his children, Cathleen Gibbany and husband Ken of Guthrie, Karen Fowler and husband Eric of Piedmont, Jesse Clayton Haney of Yukon and Quirt Charles Haney and wife Terry of Yukon and 11 grandchildren. After retirement, Bell Charles settled in Yukon and traveled often to the homeplace in Osage County, where he will be laid to rest overlooking the land he loved.
