Dr. Hal F. Holt, Business Educator. Hal Frank Holt, Ed.D., of Phoenix, Arizona, son of Frank Ross Holt of Savannah, Tennessee, and Mabel Blythe of Lynchburg, Tennessee, passed away on Sunday, December 10, 2006. He was 93. Hal was born and raised in Osage, Oklahoma; graduated from David Lipscomb College in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1933; and received a B.S. degree from Northeastern Oklahoma State Teachers College in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, in 1935. He studied with Dr. McKee Fisk at Oklahoma State University (then Oklahoma A&M) and received an M.S. degree in 1939. He pursued graduate studies at Indiana University and received his Ed.D. from the University of Pittsburg in 1952 under the tutelage of Dr. D.D. Lessenberry. Hal began his career as an educator teaching business classes at Haskell, Oklahoma, High School from 1935-37, where he met his beloved wife Floriene. Hal became the head of the Commercial Department at Northeast High School in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, in 1937, married Floriene in 1938, and taught there until 1941. He then became an instructor of Business Administration at Amarillo College, Texas in 1941. With the outbreak of World War II, Hal served his country first as an Instructor of Business at the U.S. Naval Training School at Indiana University from 1942-43. In 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve, serving on active duty until the end of the war as the supply officer of the 302nd Naval Construction Battalion in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. After his discharge in 1946, he continued to serve in the Naval Reserve until he retired as a Lieutenant Commander in 1973. After the war, Hal became an instructor of Business Administration at Phoenix College in Phoenix, Arizona, where he taught from 1946 until 1963. At that time, with the first expansion of what is now the largest community college district in the nation, he created and chaired the Business Department of Glendale Community College in Glendale, Arizona, until his retirement from teaching in 1979. During his long professional career Hal was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, the professional education fraternity, a member and officer of the National and Arizona Business Teacher Associations, a member and officer of Delta Pi Epsilon, the honorary graduate business education fraternity, and a member and then president of the Arizona Education Association. He also co-authored the textbook Principles of Accounting published by Pitman Publishing Corp. in 1957. Hal was a long-time active member of First United Methodist Church in Phoenix, Arizona. "Hal's primary interest was in accounting and in the business students he taught," remarked Ron Charvonia, a former colleague and retired fellow faculty member from Phoenix and Glendale Community Colleges. "He was extremely conscientious and a good friend." Hal was loved by all who knew him and was recognized for his soft-spoken manner and compassion for others. "I will always remember him as a truly gentle man," said one family friend. "He was intelligent, quiet and kind." Hal took great pride in the accomplishments of his two grown sons and doted on his five grandchildren, instilling in all of them the importance of a good education while setting before them an example of good character. He will be sorely missed. Hal is survived by his wife of 68 years, Floriene, sons H. Darrell Holt of Prescott, Arizona, and H. Barry Holt of Phoenix, Arizona and Arlington, Virginia, and grandchildren Carrie, Christopher, Stephen (currently serving with the U.S. Army in Iraq), William, and David. Interment will take place at the National Memorial Cemetery in Phoenix. A memorial service to celebrate Hal's life will be held for friends and family at First United Methodist Church, 5510 N. Central Avenue in Phoenix at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 28, 2006. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Scholarship Fund of the First United Methodist Foundation, 5510 N.
