Herbert Leon Humphrey

Herbert Leon Humphrey, lifelong Hominy resident, was born Feb. 1, 1952 in 
Hominy.  He was the son of Arthur Lee and Maggie L. Humphrey.  Herbert was 
raised and attended school in Hominy graduating in 1972.  While attending 
high school, Herbert was active in all Hominy Buck sports, including 
football, basketball and track.

Upon graduation from high school, Herbert attended automotive mechanic 
training at Tulsa Vo-Tech for a couple of years.  Upon Completion of his 
training, he accepted employment with Wheatley Steel in Sand Springs for a 
while and then with the Dow company in Hominy.  Later he worked for the 
water departmet for the City of Hominy for a few years.  Herbert also 
operated his own radiator repair shop, Humphrey and Son, in Owasso for a 
while.  Herbert was retired in 1985 due to health reasons.

Herbert enjoyed the outdoors, he especially loved hunting and fishing.  He 
was an avid Hominy Buck fan including all sports and was extremely proud 
of his alma mater.  Additionally, he was an excellent cook, being known 
for his exceptional Bar-B-Que.

Herbert was a longtime member of Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church in Hominy.  
He passed away on Sat., Dec. 22, 2001 at the Cancer Treatment Center of 
Tulsa at the age of forty-nine years, ten months and twenty-one days.  He 
was preceded in death by his father, two brothers, Freddie Sparks Jr. and 
Darnell Sparks; and a sister Olivia Frances Shackelfoot.

Herbert is survived by his mother, Maggie L. Humphrey of Hominy; one 
daughter, Heather Lynn Humphrey, Foyil, Ok.; eight sisters Elvinera Miles, 
OKC; Florence Robertson, Hominy; Margaret L. Hunt, Tulsa; Norma Ruth 
Patterson, Hominy; Fredricka Sparks, Hominy; Juanita Delores Gilkey, 
Riverside, CA; Leona A. Sparks, Hominy; Claudine Humphrey and Anitta Louise 
Humphrey, Hominy; four brothers, Oscar Lee Humphrey, Duncan; Louis James 
Sparks, Hominy; Bobby Don Humphrey, Enid; Antwine A. Humphrey, Holdenville; 
Glen Humphrey, Tulsa and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thurs., Dec. 27, 2001 at the 
First Baptist Church in Hominy.  Interment was held at the A.J. Powell 
Memorial Cemetery in Hominy, under the direction of Chapman-Black Funeral 
Home in Cleveland.
