The submitter has given permission to the USGenWeb Archives to store the file permanently for free access. http://www.usgwarchives.net/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ JAMES WAYNE GARRETT OCNS - March 25, 2000 - James Wayne Garrett, 72, native area resident, died at 7:40 a.m., Thursday, March 23, at his family residence in Craig, Colorado, following an extended illness. Graveside services were held Saturday in the Memorial Park Cemetery in Bartlesville, Oklahoma with the Reverend Mike McDougan officiating. Committal prayers and interment were directed by The Arnold Moore-Barnsdall Funeral Service. Mr. Garrett was born Aug. 23, 1927 in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, to George Henry and Rose Modine (Wooten) Garrett. He was reared and received his early education in Pawhuska and was graduated in 1944 from Hominy High School. He was an outstanding athlete and was offered a basketball scholarship with the 0klahoma A&M (now Oklahoma State University) College. He was an all-state champion basketball player. Wayne enlisted in the United States Army from which he received an honorable discharge. He returned to Osage County and began his longtime interest in rodeo participation and working with horses for over 20 years. He became active as a race horse trainer and was active at the larger race tracks. He won numerous trophies and awards for his bulldogging and calf roping and was the owner of Peter John, a champion racing horse A.Q.H.A. Wayne was well respected by many cowboys for his fairness and compassion for others. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Jay Smith and Pam of San Angelo, Texas; a grandson; a brother, Orbin H. Garrett of rural Pawhuska; four sisters, Loretta Floyd Milligan and Lerie Charlene (Garrett) Main both of Bartlesville, Mrs. R.B. "Buddy" Hartness of Pawhuska and Nomah Hawk Of Bentonville, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his parents.
