Lawson James Leroy Lawson was born June 8, 1949 in Tulsa, to Billy Joe and Betty Ann (Parker) Lawson. He departed this life on July 25, 2001, at the age of 52 years, 1 month, 17 days. Mr. Lawson had resided in the Depew area since 1981. He graduated from Berryhill High School in 1967 ad Southwestern State in Weatherford in 1972. James Lawson and Pamela Fields were united in marriage on October 1, 1971 in Miami, OK. To this union one son and one daughter were born. Mr. Lawson had taught and coached for 29 years at various schools throughout Oklahoma, receiving numerous coaching and teaching honors. He spent nine years at Glenpool Public Schools and was head football coach there for three years. While at Glenpool he was named Teacher of the Month. He had recently been employed at Hominy Public Schools for three years. Here, he was an assistant high school football coach and the coach of the seventh and eighth grade football teams. Over the years, he also helped coach wrestling, basketball and track. Mr. Lawson was a member of the Oklahoma Football Coaches Association and the Oklahoma Coaches Association, where he served on the Board of Controllers. In his spare time he liked to play golf and go boating. He was also a collector of Hot Wheels, especially loving Corvettes. Survivors include his wife of over 29 years, Pamela, of the home: one daughter, Paula Ostrum and husband Todd of Depew; one son B. J. Lawson of Stigler, OK; his parents of Tulsa; four grandchildren, Cody and Brittany Ostrum of Depew and Rickey and Madison Lawson of Stigler; one brother, Robert Lawson and wife Brenda of Tulsa; nieces Chrystal and Rose Lawson of Tulsa; other relatives and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents. Services were held Mon., July 30, 2001 at 10 a.m. at the Ivan L. Reeder auditorium, Depew High School, in Depew; with the Rev. Randy Overstreet officiating. Interment followed at the Bristow City Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Hutchings-Maples Funeral Home in Bristow, OK.
