LESSERT OCNS - May 3, 2002 - Jay F. Lessert, 79, life long resident of Ponca City, Oklahoma, died Thursday, April 26, 2002 at Via Christi Oklahoma Regional Medical Center. The funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 30, 2002 at the First Baptist Church Chapel with the Reverend Hance Dilbeck, Pastor, First Baptist Church officiating. Burial followed at Odd Fellows Cemetery under the direction of Trout Funeral Home. Jay was born on March 27, 1923, in Osage County, Oklahoma, to Ray L. and Mary Rubye (Farrell) Lessert. He was raised in the Ponca City area and attended Ponca City Schools, graduating in 1942. He married Geraldine "Jerry" Hogan on June 16, 1945 in Ponca City. She preceded him in death on March 15, 1993. Jay, who spent most of his life farming and ranching, managed several Sears Catalogue Stores in New Mexico and Texas and worked for Paris Furniture Store in Ponca City. He also worked for Conoco Oil Company in the Printing and Distribution Department, retiring in 1983. He enjoyed playing golf, was a member of the First Baptist Church, and the Wentz Golf Association. He and his wife enjoyed dining with family and friends, traveling and spending many hours on the golf course. He was an avid storyteller of Ponca City's and Osage County's history and people. He was very proud of his Native American heritage and enjoyed collecting items of interest. He is survived by: two sons, Chuck Lessert of Ponca City and Robert Lessert of Katy, Texas; one daughter, Connie Moriarty of Ponca City; 8 great grandchildren, and 1 great great-grandchild. He has one granddaughter, Debbie Moriarty. His six grandsons; Jay Lessert, Keith Lessert, Tim Lessert, Eric Lessert, Scott Taylor and Matt Moriarty, served as casket bearers. In addition to his wife, Jay was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Judy Guinn and Patsy Lessert, and one brother, Ray Lessert, Jr. Memorial contributions may be made to, Ponca City Kids Incorporated, C/O Brad Cassity, 11 Oak Dale Road, Ponca City, OK 74604.
