The submitter has given permission to the USGenWeb Archives to store the file permanently for free access. http://www.usgwarchives.net/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ MAXINE ERWIN-KASTL OCNS-March 3, 2000 - Funeral services were held Thursday, March 2, in the Osage Indian Baptist Church in Pawhuska with Reverend Raymond Redcorn officiating for longtime Pawhuskan, Maxine Erwin-Kastl. Maxine was born September 19, 1920 in Fairfax, Oklahoma to Shelby and Millie (Sawyers) Stewart and later moved with her family to Pawhuska, Oklahoma where she attended Pawhuska schools. January 5, 1942 she married S.M. "Bill" Erwin in Fayetteville, Arkansas and assisted him in many business ventures throughout his lifetime. To this union four children were born: Billie Maxine Stiles of Okesa, Oklahoma, Sanford Phillip Erwin of rural Pawhuska, Terry Stewart Erwin of Langley, Oklahoma and Randolph Mansfield Erwin. Mr. and Mrs. Erwin owned and operated the Pawhuska Golf and Country Club from 1943 through 1956, Erwin Flight School and Charter Service from 1956-1964, Erwin heavy Equipment Sales and Services from 1942-1978 when construction of a new highway at Main and Lynn, Pawhuska, took their business location. In 1975 Bill and Maxine purchased the Pawhuska Ready-Mix company which they operated until his death in 1982. During their many years together, they operated Erwin Bonding Company, Erwin Real Estate, licensed in Oklahoma and Kansas and ranches in Oklahoma and Kansas where they developed their own bloodline of registered Aberdeen Angus Cattle. Bill and Maxine remained residents of rural Pawhuska all of their lives. February 22, 1988 Maxine married James N. Kastl who survives at the home in Pawhuska. They enjoyed several years together before her health condition forced her to become homebound. James remained at her side, caring for her at the family home and honoring her final wishes. Maxine loved to sing, dance and entertain friends and family and was active in church, civic, political and social organizations. She was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents, Charles and Nancy (Canada) Stewart and Benjamin Terry Sawyers and Maxine (Adkins) Sawyers (listed as Fairfax Pioneers in the book "Field of Cane" pictured with children at Salt Creek Falls in front of their tent at Fairfax, Oklahoma {1903}), a sister Wonna Stone and an infant grandson. Maxine was an American Indian and her fighting spirit lives on in her descendants. Maxine is also survived by three step-children: Hildred Mae Bryant of Disney, Oklahoma, Robert Sewell Erwin of Cody, Wyoming and Elizabeth Josephine Slinkard of Sapulpa, Oklahoma, her loyal and beloved daughter-in- law, Carolyn Erwin; her sisters, Chloe Morgan of Claremore, Oklahoma; Jean McGhee of Wann, Oklahoma and a brother, Damon Stewart of Jenks, Oklahoma; her grandchildren, Greg and Day Spencer and their children, Kathryn and Steven of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; Nita Lisenba of Beeville, Texas, Tonya Owens and children, Meggin, Erin, Cathlin and Samuel of Cleveland, oklahoma; Robert Christopher and daughters, Madison and Olivia of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Kristi Lynn and Casey Ride and children, Whitney and Hunter; Bill and Kristi Erwin and son Ty Garrett, all of Owasso, Oklahoma; Nikole Erwin of Ponca City, Oklahoma; Robert Guy Erwin of New Haven, Connecticut and Amity and Glenn Parks and son Briar of Missoule, Mountana; Jerry Slinkard, Joe Slinkard and son, Justin of Fort Worth, Texas, Raeann Young and Coleman of Sapulpa, Oklahoma; Kerry Yancy and daughter, Natasha of Pawhuska, Oklahoma; and step-sons Reverend James H. Kastl, Jr. and wife Dana and children of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; and Jerry Brandenburg and children of South Carolina. Maxine was a member of the Osage Indian Baptist Church in Pawhuska. Interment was in the family plot in the Pawhuska Cemetery. Pallbearers were her nephews, Phillip Morgan, Paul Morgan, Perry Morgan, Parker Morgan and Clarence Stone, Jr. Services were under the direction of Johnson Funeral Directors of Pawhuska.
