Interment will be at the Fort Gibson National Cemetery, Tuesday June 4, at 2:00 p.m. Richard was born September 11, 1915 to L. E. and Mina Halstead in Cushing, Oklahoma. He served his country in the Pacific Theatre during WWII and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He married Mary Frances Dillon on November 20, 1942. Richard and Mary moved their family to Colorado shortly after his returning from the service and he worked at the United States Air Force Academy until his retirement in 1968. Richard enjoyed the outdoors, and was an avid fisherman and hunter. Richard is survived by Mary Frances Halstead, his wife of 59 years; three sisters, Lois Wright of Colorado, Jesse Mercer of Wisconsin, and Ethel Darnell of Oklahoma; eight children, Mary Ellen Smiley of Colorado Springs, CO, Loise Hobbs of Enid, OK, Leroy Halstead of New Castle, OK, Robert Halstead of Colorado Springs, CO, Bonney Hoover of Ada, OK, Cecil Halstead of Willits, CA; and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Richard was preceded in death by his parents Louis and Mina Halstead, a brother Robert, and an infant daughter.
