CALLAWAY Jr. OCNS - August 28, 2002 - Richard D. "Dick" Callaway, Jr., 80, longtime resident of Fairfax, Oklahoma, died Monday, August 26, 2002 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Oklahoma City. The funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, August 29, at the First United Methodist Church in Fairfax with Reverend William Forrest, Pastor officiating. Burial, with military honors, will follow in the Fairfax Cemetery under the direction of Hunsaker-Wooten Funeral Home. Dick Callaway was born September 26, 1921, in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, the son of Richard Dewitt Callaway, Sr., and Etta Ilena (Evans) Callaway. When he was in the first grade, he moved with his family to Fairfax where he completed his education. Shortly after graduating from Fairfax High School, Dick entered the U.S. Marine Corps and served during World War II from 1942 until 1946. He reentered the service in 1950 and served in the Korean Conflict receiving his honorable discharge in 1954. During the Korean, he was one of the "Chosen Few", receiving numerous medals including the Purple Heart. After his military service, Dick returned home to care for his mother and work with his brother-in-law in the farming business. Dick grew up in the Methodist Church. He worked with Toys for Tots and worked with the Marines giving scholarships. He loved hunting and fishing and was an avid gardener and a great cook. Survivors include one sister, Clara Leona Tate of Fairfax and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Nora Ilena Cox.
