On May 31, 2002 she entered into rest at the Cleveland Manor Nursing Home in Cleveland, Oklahoma. She was 94 years of age. Rena Russell was married to Nick Thornton until he passed away. Upon this union Rena had one son, Royal Thornton. She remarried to Otis Russell on April 1, 1933 in Bentonville, Arkansas. From this union Rena and two daughters: Nancy Russell Graham and the late Verna Mae Bryan. Rena was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Hominy. She was a Gold Star Charter Member of the American War Mothers Mi-Tho-Ti-Moi Chapter 6 of Hominy. She was the last Charter Member of the Mi-Tho-Ti-Moi, a member for 59 years. Rena Russell is survived by her son Royal Thornton of Bartlesville, Oklahoma and a daughter Nancy Russell Graham of Hominy, Oklahoma; eight grandchildren - Lisa R. Dewitt and husband Craig of Hominy, Russell K. Bryan of Roston Court, Georgia, C. Mitchell Bryan of Buckley, Washington, Charity Ware of Hominy, and Charles Frank Ware of Hominy, Jacqueline Gilliland of Pawhuska, Sandra H. Rasnic of Pryor, Oklahoma and Robin M. Thornton of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; seven great grandchildren - Cody R. Dewitt, Corbin S. Dewitt, Brielle E. Bryan, Jennifer R. Ware, Joe Cash Ware, Sonny Gilliland and Jacqueline R. Rasnic; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Rena was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, a daughter Verna Mae Bryan, one sister, three brothers, and one grand daughter Patricia R. Harris. Services for Rena Russell were held Tuesday, June 4, 2002 at the First Assembly of God Church in Hominy with Reverend Ray Hale and Reverend Clifton Phelps officiating. Serving as pall bearers were Teddy Acott, Bob Davis, William Shadlow, James DeRoin, Wayne Brown and Craig Dewitt. Interment will be at the A. J. Powell Memorial Cemetery. The family entrusted Powell Funeral Home with service arrangements.
