Mercifully, she was diagnosed only three weeks before her death. She complained of back pain one Saturday and was diagnosed with cancer the following week. Mother died peacefully and was in relatively little pain given the nature of her disease. She was ninety-five and now joins our father and sister Barbara in God's presence. As many of you know, she suffered a stroke approximately three years ago. Before that time she happily resided at Copper Lake Retirement Center in Edmond -- just a few miles from Ray and Delores. The stroke may have caused her to misplace individual or place nmes now and then, but her mind was clear to the end. We were fortunate that she moved to Heritage House Assisted Living Center after her stroke. Their level of compassionate care was wonderful, including their ongoing concern and and assistance with her last illness. Hospice came in for two weeks and fully lived up to our expectations of loving care and compassion. Dixie was born in Ardmore, Indian Territory, (later Oklahoma) on March 12, 1907. She attended the University of Texas and taught school in Moore, where she met her husband. They were married for sixty years before his death fourteen years ago. Their family included Barbara Smith Combs (who died in 1973) and her daughter Angelina, Ray Delores and their children Kerrey and Jamie, and Carl and our children Barbara and Blake. Her life joyously included her great-grandchild Alexandra, Kerrey's daughter. The Smiths lived in Hominy until the family moved to Fayetteville, Arkansas in 1957. After her husband's death, she moved to Oklahoma City to be closer to Ray and Delores and their wonderful family. By her request Dixie had a graveside service with just family. Rev. Tim Poole read the Episcopalian service from her beloved 1928 Prayer Book. The day was misty and the Oklahoma Hills were never more beautiful. Although it is always difficult to say last farewells, her resting place was next to people she loved. She cared deeply for family and friends and the family wanted to let you know of her passing. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Osage County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/osage/osage.htm
