YORK Sr. OCNS - April 8, 2002 - Thornton W. York, Sr., 79, lifelong resident of Pawhuska, Oklahoma, passed away, Friday, April 5, 2002, in the Jane Phillips Medical Center, Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Thornton Wesley York was born November 17, 1922, in Cleveland, Oklahoma, the son of Albert and Rebecca (McFall) Hishaw. On June 3, 1942, he married Ernestine R. Reid in Pawhuska, where they made their home. Mr. York was retired from Cargill Industries, where he had worked as a truck driver. At the time of his death, he was working in the maintenance department of the Pawhuska School System. Mr. York was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School in Pawhuska, where he excelled as a member of the school's basketball team. At one time during his basketball career, Thornton had played against basketball legend Marques Haynes. Thornton was a member of the American Legion, having served in the United States Army during World War II, and was also a member of the Oklahoma Army National Guard. He was a thirty-nine year member of the Bethsaida Baptist Church in Pawhuska and also the Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church in Hominy, Oklahoma. Survivors include: His wife, Ernestine York of the home; his daughters, Gigi Rogers and Nancy Ann Rogers both of Bartlesville, Marva Stith of Denver, Colorado and Thressa Rowland of Pawhuska; his sons, Thornton York, Jr., of Bartlesville, Reginald Ray York of Denver, and Sherman Lee York of Del City, Oklahoma; an uncle, Leon McFall of Battle Creek, Michigan; sixteen grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren and a host of other family and friends. Services will be held Friday, April 12, at 1:00 p.m., in the First Baptist Church, Sixth and Prudom, Pawhuska, Oklahoma, with Reverend Oluf Holder officiating. Interment will be in the Pawhuska City Cemetery where graveside military rites will be presented by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Johnson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
