'Jim' Wooten James Howard 'Jim' Wooten, 70, went to be with our Lord on Fri., Oct. 5, 2001 after a courageous and determined battle with heart disease and related illness. Jim was born Dec. 30, 1930 in Buffalo, MO to Hervey and Mable (Smith) Wooten. Raised and educated in Carthage, MO, he entered the Marine Corps at an early age, spent three years in the U.S. Air Force and was three years in the U.S. Navy. Upon discharge from the Navy, he was then a member of the Naval Reserve, being called to active duty during the Korean War. Jim also served one tour of duty in Vietnam as a civilian helicopter mechanic training South Vietnamese soldiers in sheet metal work. On Aug. 13, 1955 he married Billy Jo Swindle in Lamar, MO. To this union two children were born, a daughter, Julie Ann in March 1960 and Jeffrey Howard in April 1962. He and Billy were brought back together and were remarried in 1994. Jim spent many years in law enforcement with the Carthage Police Department, he served as Chief of Police in Hominy, and was employed by the Jasper County Sheriff's Department until retiring in 1990. He was former owner of Jim's Key Lock and Alarm in Carthage, MO and sold the business in 1994 to retire to Grand Lake in Grove. He was past Commander and life member of the VFW Post 2590 in Carthage, a member of the American Legion #1078, Grove, and the Loyal Order of Moose #862 in Tulsa. He was also active on the late model stock car racing circuit for many years and remained a race fan, and avid fisherman. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Hominy where he was saved and baptized in 1975. He is survived by his wife Billy of the home, daughter Julie and husband Jim Martin, Wynona; son Jeff and wife Michele of Palo, IA; three grandchildren, Ryan Wooten, Hominy; Chase and Chandler Bolton, Palo, IA. Also surviving are his mother Mable Ford, sisters June and Edwin 'Bud' Cooper, Virginia and Kenneth Spencer all of Carthage, MO; one brother, Carrol Ford and Linda of Louisburg, MO; two half sisters, Loretta Wooderson and Max of Prairie Village, KS and Elaine Clark and Cecil of Springfield, MO and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and a brother Dale. Poppa, we will miss you. Give Earnhardt a big pat on the back for us! Love…your family and your favorite daschund, Samantha. Services were held at 2 p.m. Tues., Oct. 9 at the Ulmer Funeral Home Chapel in Carthage, MO. Rev. Don McGonigal officiated. VFW Post 2590 will serve as pallbearers. Visitation was from 6-7 p.m. Mon., Oct. 8 at Ulmer Funeral Home. Burial was in the Park Cemetery, Carthage, MO. Contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
