He was born on March 13, 1915, in Gibson County, TN., to the parents of James A. and Elizabeth M. Word. James was a retired structural engineer for Robberson Steel Company, where he worked for 43 years. He attended Phillips University in Enid where he played marimba and bells and traveled with the Hannah Concert Company to promote the university. He was a ham operator for many years with call letters of WA5KFT and participated in the Military Amateur Radio System. For years he was an active member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) as elder, teacher and choir member. James was preceded in death by his wives, Ida May Word and Mary Johnson Word; parents, Elizabeth M. and James A. Word; brother, Jack C. Word; and grandson, Troy D. Word. James is survived by a sister, Ruth Isles Blaschke, OKC; daughters, Betty K. Reed, Collierville, TN; and Jamey L. Faddah, Amman, Jordan; a son Jack A Word, Bethany, OK; stepchildren Marilyn Freeman, Pharr, TX; Daisy Carter, Casper, WY: and James Johnson, Grand Prairie, TX; grandchildren Scott Word, Bethany, OK; Wendy Wilkerson, Bethany, OK; Brooks Reed, Noblesville, IN; Benjamin Reed, Clarksville, TN; Dr. Robin Reed, Clarksville, TN; B.J. Reed, Lexington, KY; and Sami Faddah, Collierville, TN; several step grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002 at 10 a.m. at Western Oaks Christian Church in Oklahoma City. Rev. Kyle Maxwell officiated. Interment was at 3 p.m. at Osage City Cemetery in Osage, OK. Music by Jeannie Miller, Organist and Jim Henline, Soloist. Pallbearers were Scott Word, Brooks Reed, Benjamin Reed, B.J. Reed, Bobby Reed and Sami Faddah. Memorials may be sent to the Alzheimer's Association.
