"Joe" Young J.M. "Joe" Young, 92, of Amarillo died Monday, Nov. 1, 2004. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Grace Baptist Church in Canyon with the Rev. Gordon Cox, pastor, the Rev. Billy D. Nickell, pastor of First Assembly of God Church in Amarillo, and the Rev. Thurl Barrett, retired Assembly of God minister, officiating. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Littlefield Memorial Park Cemetery in Littlefield with Matt Bales, grandson, officiating. Arrangements are by Brooks Funeral Directors of Canyon. Mr. Young was born Feb. 16, 1912, in Hominy, Okla., to Noah and Nellie Graham Young. He married Johnnie Hensel at Olton on Nov. 4, 1934. He pastored churches in the Texas Panhandle and Arkansas in the 1940s. He farmed in Lamb and Castro counties and after retirement, moved to Joplin, Mo., in 1976, where he ranched. He returned to the Texas Panhandle in 2001. He was a lifelong member of the Assembly of God Church. He was preceded in death by his wife on Dec. 15, 1985; a daughter, Martha Ann Young on Sept. 24, 1939; and five brothers, Roosevelt "Bud" Young, Wiley "Shorty" Young, Harvey Young, Noah Young and Eugene Young; and three sisters, Millie Capps, Nova Melton and Della Waggoner. Survivors include three daughters, Erlene Harris and Sue Strickland, both of Amarillo, and Loretta Bales of Neosha, Mo; six sons, Jody Young and Martin Young, both of Sunray, Ernest Young of Alamosa, Colo., Loren Young of Weatherford, Okla., Ronald Young of Lubbock and Tony Young of Amarillo; two sisters, Mary Stowers of Canyon and Corda Carter of Denton; 29 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to BSA Hospice, P.O. Box 950, Amarillo, TX 79176; or Panhandle Down Syndrome Guild, P.O. Box 20783, Amarillo, TX 79114. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
