Residents, children of John Elias Sumpter and step children of Annie Pearl CRISS Sumpter, both who are buried in Pawuska city cem. Osage co. This listing of children of Madeline Sumpter Mason was in the personal effects of my mother in law, Ellena Faris GULLETT GRIMES.(Ellena died january, 2002) Ellena's mother (Belle Forrest SUMPTER GULLETT) was a step sister to Madeline. I found an old paper in Ellena's handwriting and no date. The lines have no numbers for reference so I will type them in lines as they are written. The dates on the record show births until 1934 and the individuals grew up and had children--so, I would guess the list was written with an ink pen, before 1960? Madeline Sumpter Mason was a child of John Elias Sumpter and his first wife" Doan" Dennis who is known to many of the family as Mariah C (carney?) Dennis Sumpter. THEY were married 13 April 1885 in Barry Mo. (Flatcreek?) Mariah died in childbirth I am told by family. Grandmother Belle Gullett said in 1961 ,that Mariah died in a wagon overturn in a river. I am told the family of Polly Sumpter, Madelines brother, said that his mother died in childbirth. I have no proofs either story, but lean toward the story of the birthed children over the step child. (basically in my notes, I carry both legends-) I am a" play it safe" historian. (grinjudy) As things progress, these legends have been sorted out by family and there was a wagon overturn in the Red River in Quicksand, but the mother and children survived. Many believe Mariah Dennis Sumpter died of childbed. Madeline Sumpter Mason was the first child born, Polly was the second child born. ------------ children of Madeline Sumpter Mason: Gertee feb 21,____near washington Georgie _________near washington , married Earl Wells in 1922, died in 1936 leaving 8 children ranging in age from 3 months to 8 years.
