Polson 12/3/1830 12/3/1893 Flora (Ridge) Polson 4/5/1837 8/18/1876 Historic notes: Major Ridge, John Ridge and Stand Watie were related. Major Ridge was father to John and Uncle to Stand Watie. All signed the Treaty of New Echota, which sold/transferred Cherokee land in the East to the US Government in exchange for land in Indian Territory and $5,000,000. This transaction caused a split in the Cherokee Tribe that lasted many years perhaps even to today. Three of the signers were assassinated on the same day (Major Ridge, John Ridge and Elias Boudinot a.k.a. Buck Watie who was Stand Watie’s brother). John Ridge’s home was located near the present site of the cemetery and history books relay that he was buried in his family’s cemetery after he was dragged out of his home in the night and stabbed to death by several Cherokees. Stand Watie is said (by locals, near Southwest City, MO) to have escaped the assassinated/execution because he was warned and fled. Stand Watie would later serve in the Civil War as the only Native American to hold the rank of General. He would take revenge on his families enemies during the war as he burned and pillaged his rival’s, Chief John Ross, home located near Tahlequah, OK.
