Twenty-six men were on the works when the awful crash came and all were hurled headlong into the river, a distance of 42 feet, amid heavy timbers and steel bridging. Of the whole number, not one escaped some injury, some seriously and some killed outright. The cause of the accident was the giving away of the falsework, and much blame is cast on the foreman, as it was considered by many to be unsafe and some had quit the works because they considered it unsafe. As soon as mesengers could go, physicians were called from Grove, Sothwest City, Afton and Vinita, who did all in their power to alleviate the sufferings of the mangle victims.
